Methinks that glance screen MIGHT be a universal feature of Windows Phone 8.1 as I've noticed the text size for the time on glance is the VERY same size as on the lock screen. In the Nokia Black update, the glance screen time size was smaller than in Amber. After installing 8.1, it's gotten larger.
I had read that they are going to provide a VoIP app. Did you see that. I am asking because Google seems to have cut us off from their Google Voice service. Mine worked for a while but now it is dead.
I need it for calls from Europe to the US and there are always problems/costs. I can always use my Android tablet, but I did not want to lug too much gear when we travel - which we do a lot in the Europe.
On the tablet I use Google Voice and the GrooveIP app. Since I set it up in the US, all calls (even from Europe) are local calls free of charge.
If you want to set it up, let me know. The tricky part is to setup the wallet which you need even if you never spend a dime. There is an app that makes that easy - else it's a pain to set it up.
I am now running WP8.1 since about 10am
I gotta say I am impressed
Well worth the upgrade,, Swype will take some getting used to, but works very well. I like it.
I won't go into as much detail, but I like all the changes.
Action Center is nice because it alerted me to the fact there
was an issue with the login to one of my email accounts, I would not have known till I tried to access it.
It has it's advantages beyond the Quick access buttons. Regardless of live tiles. And no one is required to pull it down for any reason. it's a welcome feature on my phone though.
Music is not having to reload all of my music,, I go right in and can start playing without any pause or waiting.
I have about 840 songs now,, no issues after the first initial loading.
But it does say Loading at the top when I go in, think it is checking for added songs each time.
But not an issue.
Love the new tiles background.
Some tiles I have need to be updated to be transparent though.
Twitter's Cortana integration needs a lot of work.
saying hashtag anything and then some text will run it all together still.
I don't use facebook.
I don't like all the games being integrated with the Apps List,, leave them in the xBox tile.
IE is much improved for the better. But I really despise pop-up ad's.
Tested Geo Fencing for my home but did not get the alert. Not sure what is up with that.
But all GPS/location finders have a hard time finding my exact address.
And I think Cortana goes based off of that, not GPS coordinates, not sure. I will have to test that some more.
The reminders work though, and what is cool, if you go into Cortana's Notebook Reminders
Your reminders are there as a voice message. interesting.
There is so much about this update it is hard to cover it all in detail without writing a book.
Calendar is much improved,, but still needs to have Recurrence of every 2 weeks.
Such as, every other Monday, but that is only possible to do in Outlook Calendar from Office.
So, I can set it up in there and it sync's just fine.
I purchased Office 365 so have it available on all of my systems.
As a note,, you get 60 min per month of free Skype calls included, and I think that is international.
Not sure how much texting, but, meh.
install UC Broser and start Cortana
Say UC Browser QR Scan and she will say Gtaha Scan away and start the QR Scanner for you.
So that works as a quick work around. I am sure we may see a bit more of that.
Or it will eventually become Native to Cortana.
Anyway,, well worth the update.. I encourage people to take advantage of the Dev Preview if they wish, despite any warnings.
Not all phone will get Glance unless Nokia can figure out an app for it.
Icon's and similar are limited by the Screen hardware. Something about Memory for the screen not existing.
I don't miss Glance.
Lock Screen Customizing is coming, but won't be till later this summer.
Double tap to Wake is not here yet,, may come with Nokia Cyan Update....
Miracast over WiFi is also coming to phones like the Icon
Next update could be October give or take a month.
At this time I believe they said there will be 2 or 3 this year.
Good info, Tepid. Thanks.
As I posted in the other thread:
Having had cell phones for many years, I'm ignorant to jail breaking. I looked into it once with my Droid X2 on Vz, but was afraid to goof things up. I was running a business and didn't want to face the consequences. Time factor with it all also.
Retired now, so I give two hoots. Is it possible to do so now to obtain 8.1 upgrade through the developers offer?
