Got a 2TB (really about 1.89) WD MyPassport USB 3.0 HDD over the holidays at an awesome price. Used it today with Macrium to image my main partition containing 200GB+ and the other recovery, uefi partitions. Took about 35 minutes. I love this!

It reported I/O at the end of 1GB/sec read and 800MB+/sec write average.

I expected hours from 2.0 experience. Advancement in tech is wonderful! :geek:

Enjoy it until USB 3.1 comes out. No backward compatibility. :)

Those are amazing numbers though. I had a USB 3.0 PCI express card with USB 3.0 dock. WD Black 640 GB Sata III only reported about 138 MB/s sequential write, after fresh format. Still much better than my old USB 2.0 24 MB/s though. :)

Hmmm, if it's Macrium showing the speed it must be 1 Gb/s as it always shows in Xbits/s where X is Mega or Giga or xhundred kbits/s or whatnot. Must be because USB 3.0 spec max is 5 Gb/s.

The USB3 specs are highly inflated. I have yet to see any disk (even a SSD) that can run at that speed. A lot seems to get lost in the USB3 controller. And there seem to be vast differences depending on the hardware attachment. eSata does not have that problem and although it is specced at only 3Gb/sec, it is faster than USB3.

Fast, aren't they!?!? I love mine, which I use to save all my data to. When I leave the house, it goes with me, since I'm working on a huge lawsuit and have lots of incriminating (to the other side) evidence. I have two of them which I alternate with the cloud. :)

Oh, and BTW, I got the WD from Target at a huge savings just before Target financials were hacked! Had to get a new bank debit/credit card and notify quite a few payees of the new numbers.

Regardless the actual speed I just know it much faster than my old 2.0 external drives. The bits/bytes thing always gets mixed up. I'm happy with it. Guess that's what really matters.

I am with OP and his excitement. When I first got mine (Sony, not WD) I was thinking something is wrong :p Cause I had not read any reviews before buying. But then from 30-31 MB per sec to something like 100+ MB per sec is just wonderful.
However the bad part of USB 3.0 is it highly depends on drivers. I mean I have seen my friend's Intel X58 board provides transfer rate around 125-130 MB per sec, while mine averages out at 100 MB per sec. Little sad, but hey I don't care much ;)

What's eSATA btw? I mean are their different hard disks which are eSATA or what? I have seen the eSATA plug on my motherboard, but even in this three years I haven't even had the interest to search for it. Shame on me :(

eSata is just another attachment like USB. You have it either directly on your board or you can get a PCI card like for USB3. It attaches directly to the internal Sata channel. Although the specs are lower than the USB3 specs, in real life it is faster.

I run it with an external enclosure like this one and you can put any Sata disk into it. Right now I have a SSD in it from where I run my virtual systems (5x Linux, Windows 8.1 and Android).

Yes shame on you. eSATA is fast very nearly as fast as having your hard drive internal. And totally reliable. My Note book only has USB 3.0 and I deal with it, it is fast nearly as fast as eSATA but not near as reliable. I have external eSATA hard dives hooked up to WS that are 24/7 machines the eSATA drives have never failed or dropped connection In the last 4 years. I'm sure that USB 3.0 External drives would disconnect at some point running like these do. I find USB 3.0 just about as flaky as USB 1.0 was. A lot to the problems I found are related to the connectors The A type connectors have very short connectors for the USB 3 connections. My WD passport 2 GB has the Mini connectors and has been flawless for 6 months or so. My NB has issues with the left side ports there on a daughterboard. I miss not having a eSATA connection but also realize that USB 3 and 3.1 are going to be far better.

Strange . . . My new HP desktop has USB 3.0 and I have no problems whatsoever with it. I've had my Toshiba external 1 TB drive for about a year and have never had a disconnect with it, either while using it with USB 2.0 or 3.0. I've had the WD for several months and haven't experienced any disconnects with it either.

Since it seems USB 3.1 won't be backward compatible, I guess it'll be awhile before I worry about that one.

As far as USB 3.0, I only have one device that uses it. It's a Seagate 3TB external HDD.

Yeah, it's pretty fast. But I'm not quite as enthusiastic as OP. Then again, I've become fairly apathetic about new tech given I've seen it come and go so fast. In the computer industry there's "breakthroughs" just about every day. USB 3.0 is just another one of them, and it'll be replaced with something even better in a couple years or something. So, yeah, I'm underwhelmed by most stuff, depressing as it may be. I've learned to just buy what's current and not sweat about what's coming.

The only thing that's got me a bit excited is "quantum computers". By what I can understand about them, when it does really hit, they're going to be quite a game-changer.

Hmm, speaking of game changers... when "wearable computing" takes off, does that mean we'll have to carry the batteries in our "underware?"

If you have an eSata port - either on your mobo or via a PCI card, you can attach external disks that are eSata capable or any Sata disk thru an enclosure like I posted earlier (can also be a closed enclosure). The eSata port connects directly to the sata channel, that's why it is so fast.

It's better than carrying the bulky stuff on yer wrist, especially if you're a gal. :)

Back when I was a Microsoft MVP, I won a couple of those smart watches. They were way, way ahead of their time, and quite bulky, but I wore mine for awhile. They didn't do a whole lot, and required a subscription to keep them alive. Eventually, I let my subscription lapse and stopped wearing the watch.

I wish I could remember what I did with them, because I'd like to compare them to the newer ones coming out. They're probably packed away somewhere with a lot of old technology that I wanted to keep. Sigh . . .
