Random ticking sound inside Laptop

Hi, I'm getting this random clicking sound(more of a tick-tock-ish) that's coming from within my system. I'm not sure where but it's adequately loud for me to notice. It just goes 2 clicks(tick-1 tick-2) then goes away. It doesn't have a specific time frame, like it doesn't happen every how many minutes or so.

I actually wasn't worried until I've read some sites that it could be a start of a so to be hdd failure. If it is, is there any way I could fix it? Or at least how long do I have before it goes total bye-bye on me?

I've attached a .wav file of the sound being recorded from my mobile phone.

Have you attached some USB connected device which goes to sleep or get disconnected after a certain time?

Could it be you cd/dvd drive? I have it happen and its a driver issue.

Have you attached some USB connected device which goes to sleep or get disconnected after a certain time?

blueis300: Not really sure, CD/DVD drive works perfectly fine and I rarely use it nor have touched its drivers.
lifetec: The only usb device I have connected is my mouse, it doesn't have a sleep function or such.

It might be a good idea to start migrating all your data to another storage medium just in case it is the HDD going bad.

Going to the drives manufacturer site, you might be able to find a diagnostic tool for checking the drive. Most HDD manufacturers offer such a tool to check the integrity of the drive.

it will tell you about the health of HDD but by sound of, it looks like CD/DVD is being polled for some reason. I think there was o theme about that problem somewhere on this forume some time, not too long ago.

HDS reports my HDD as a 100% on Performance and Health.

If it's the dvd drive that's ticking, what could be causing it?

Unfinished or bad installation of a program or driver from a CD /DVD, an open program that is looking for a file on disk, files in CD burning folder, to name just a few causes.

To eliminate the CD drive, just open it and leave it slightly open. It can't do anything in that position.

In 30+ years, I've never heard that sound on any system of mine.

Good Luck

Thanks!

Somehow the ticking stopped, probably something was trying to update/change my cd drivers but what's important is that it stopped. Thanks for your suggestions.
