Solved "A reboot is required to complete device installation"

Hello forum,

I have a windows 8 laptop and a linux desktop, both connected to the same screen using hdmi - since my screen has only 1 HDMI input, I use an HDMI splitter.

Every time I move from the linux to the windows 8 laptop (using a HDMI mini remote control), I get a message from windows saying that in order to apply these changes I need to reboot.

Note that I also use the same wireless keyboard and mouse for both computers - each time I change from one computer to the other, I unplug the USB that controls them and plug it in the computer I will use.

I think that the problem is related to the HDMI, not the keyboard/mouse usb - but I am not sure.

Needless to say that it is very annoying and I cant keep restarting the LT each time I move from one to the other.

I checked event viewer to see what causes this and these are the relevant messages:

1 - Device 'USB\VID_045E&PID_0745&MI_01\7&1a5cec9a&0&0001' requires installation.
Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-PnPConfig/Configuration
Kernel-PnPConfig
Event id: 3

2 - A reboot is required to complete device installation of device 'USB\VID_045E&PID_0745&MI_01\7&1a5cec9a&0&0001'
Microsoft-Windows-UserPnp/DeviceInstall

Event id: 8000

Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this, make it stop requesting reboots?

Many thanks in advance,

linuxgirl

Addition - I just plugged and unplugged the usb that controls the wireless keyboard and mouse (without moving to the other computer) and got the same request as above - so I think I was wrong and the plugging and unplugging of the wireless usb causes windows to try to "reinstall and restart" - question is why does it do that and how do I solve it? I tried to find pnp configurations that could be changed, but didn't find anything.

Thanks again!

Hey.

My general instincts about this is that there is nothing that you can do to fix it.

Windows would not request a reboot if you did not use the HDMI splitter. That is the device that is throwing things off here. (Test and see. Remove splitter from the equation entirely, to test. Simply have Windows machine in power on state without HDMI cable from TV (or monitor) attached, then attach it. It should just show the screen. Another test is to just have HDMI cable attached from Windows to TV normally, while TV is off. Turn TV on. Should just come right up on TV.)

By any chance, do you have a link to the exact specific HDMI splitter you are attempting to use well?

Update the bios of the Windows 8 machine and update the video driver to latest too, for good measure.

One further question: In your test above, does Device Manager show the specific name of the TV or monitor, or not? How about when using the splitter?

Hi MasterChief,

Thank you for your answers. I did several other tests and confirmed now with a 100% certainty - the reason for the reboot request is not caused by switching between the HDMIs - it only happens when I move the wireless usb that controls the keyboard and mouse. Not only that, it does the same thing each time I plug it on a different USB plug on the laptop. Every time, the same thing, with the same messages in the event viwer.

Based on that, do you still think the HDMI splitter is causing this? I dont have a link for it, sorry.

Also - the device manager does show my specifc monitor at all times, with or without the splitter - I still have the monitor CD and updated the drivers recently - so it is not showing "generic monitor", it is showing the correct one.

I hope we find something to fix this, quite annoying :-(

What do you think?

Quick update - problem solved - the moment I gave up using the hdmi splitter everything went back to normal, so thanks for the help!

Yes, I figured as much. Shame really, but nothing you or I could do besides what you've already done by "going back to normal" heh heh. You're welcome.

If you look online, you might be able to find a splitter that strictly says it is compatible with Windows. Then you'd be able to use it. I honestly don't know if something like that exists, but it probably does.
