Samsung D3 Station 3tb external drive

Hi

apologies if this looks a bit of a dodgy post but I'm struggling to type due to pulling my hair out on an almost daily basis recently. I have a HP Envy laptop running windows 8.1. I have bought a Samsung 3Tb D3 Station external HDD to use as backup. Product blurb (and indeed user guide) confirms suitability for use with Windows XP, VISTA, 7 and 8. I have used the drive with my desktop pc and the Samsung Drive Manager installs perfectly. However when I plug into my laptop the installation starts then an error message appears showing Windows XP, Vista and 7 and that I should check my operating system. The instructions say nothing about having to go searching for additional drivers for Windows 8. Can anyone offer any help with this? After problems with iTunes not running without QuickTime (no solution available), Silverlight running video without any sound and my desktop hard drive collapsing, I'm rapidly reaching that place known as "the end of my tether".

well to answer some of your questions yes itunes does not function without quicktime as it is what apple uses for .mp4 playback and is a crucial part of the program, silverlight imo is just buggy still and not much seems to use it (mine does work but though), what version is yours in your program and features menu? the HDD is made by seagate and not samsung so its confusing but you need the driver that is on this page Samsung D Series External Drives | Seagate also i would jsut not use the software its crap from what i have heard and would just use it for storage and use your own software like acronis or macrium reflect if you are backing up your os.

I have to agree and sympathise with csmrcls. To stop you pulling your hair out, I get exactly the same problem when trying to install the Samsung software on Windows 8.1. I joined this forum because it addresses Windows 8 problems - the fact that the software may be "crap" is neither here nor there. It is advertised as being suitable for Windows 8, and I certainly cannot get it to install. I also couldn't get the drive to run on a usb 3.0 port, but I am still working on that. I'd be grateful to know if csmrcls has managed that.
This drive is advertised with some interesting security features, and the web site shows the software as being Windows 8 compatible. That's from the link shown by rvcjew - he obviously hasn't tried it. I've also tried running it in Compatibility Mode, but without success (same error as reported - suitable for Windows 7, etc. Check your OS).
I'd be grateful if anybody has any ideas about this.

Thanks to rvcjew and awbs for replying to my post. I've decided to get back to this issue, first by following rvcjew's advice and downloaded from the link. Net effect - exactly the same error message! I've now gone down the "official" route and emailed Seagate with my model serial number and description of the problem. If I get no joy here, I'll be back on to Amazon to se what they can do because clearly if Seagate say its not compatible with Windows 8 (+8.1) then we have a false advertising situation. I'll re-post if / when anything happens.

Thanks csmrcls. To be clear, the software I was referring to was the software in rvcjew's link (which I had already found for myself). It is certainly advertised as being Win8 compatible, and my experience is that it most certainly is not. Thanks for progressing this on our behalf.

Latest reply from Seagate indicates that the Samsung Drive Manager is suitable for Windows 8 but not 8.1. Samsung are allegedly making an 8.1 compatible version available either the end of January or early February. My observations on this are a) The error message make no mention of Windows 8 as being a compatible OS, b) I cannot comment on whether it actually does work with Windows 8 as I was already on 8.1 when this error was discovered and c) I hope the Seagate response is fact and not a put off (either by them or Samsung). So I'll not hold my breath but will, for the time being, do some drag and drop backups and read up on how to take an OS image as a friend has just seen hers corrupted with no OEM OS disc supplied.

I am thinking of buying backup software, Acronis as it has been recommended to me, but after downloading the trial version of this, my new Samsung has now gone missing on the system when I was on the verge of doing a backup. The drive did show up earlier today, so I don't know If I now have a problem with the Samsung's USB3 on my Lenovo Ideapad Z580?

I am thinking of buying backup software, Acronis as it has been recommended to me, but after downloading the trial version of this, my new Samsung has now gone missing on the system when I was on the verge of doing a backup. I must admit I haven't checked with Samsung yet as to whether the promised 8.1 upgrade of Device Manager is available yet but I have managed a complete drag and drop backup to the D3 drive and more importantly a full Norton backup after several attempts. Interestingly, the Norton backups kept falling over usually saying the drive (D3) wasn't there even though it was. As a last resort, I plugged it into a different USB slot on my laptop and it ran through to completion. I'll get back on to Samsung and see whether the mysterious upgrade is available yet and post back here if/when I get an answer.
