USB 3.0 Not Working in Windows 8.1, but it's Different

I've read a number of other users' problems with USB 3.0 not working, but mine is different!

I have an ASUS CM6870-us012s desktop, currently running Windows 8.1 (originally downloaded from the Store, but I recently purchased a retail full-install version to see if I could correct the many problems). It has several USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports in front - the USB 2.0 ports work fine, but the USB 3.0 ports SORT OF WORK (but they don't).....

When I plug in a USB 3.0 external drive (Western Digital My Passport), I hear the brief music indicating Plug-n-Play connection occurred (the USB 3.0 end was inserted into the USB 3.0 port). However, I don't get a drive letter assigned, nor do I see it in File Explorer, nor do I see it registered in ASUS's AI Suite II/System Information/Disk......but I DO see it in Disk Management (without a drive letter - just Disk 5)!

There are no problems appearing in Device Manager, nor in any item related to USB (none anywhere, nadda, zip, zero) - everthing is working, so when I look for hardware errors (running Hardware Troubleshooter), none are found. When I look at AI Suite II software to un-install Boost 3.0, there is no Boost 3.0 shown that I can disable or un-install, as others have done to correct their problems.

I tried a full install of Windows 8.1 and have the exact same result, yet when the system was originally running Windows 8.0 (that came on the PC), everything worked perfectly!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Frank

In Disk Management right click and assign a drive letter and see if that helps.

I gave it a drive letter of J: and it then appeared in File Explorer and in ASUS' AI Suite II/System Information/Disk, as well as Disk Management! If I turn off the PC, then turn it back on, then plug that same USB 3.0 drive in, it once again is seen as J:. However, if I use another USB 3.0 drive (exact same size/properties), it doesn't register a drive letter - just like above! I purchased these drives to do backups, so maybe I'll have to assign the other drive as K: (in case I want to plug both in).......I wish I knew why this was only partially working, but at least I have a work-around!

Thanks,
Frank

Make sure you have the latest chipset driver installed since it contains all updates for any built in devices on the MB and in your case it is USB3.0.

I am not sure if your Asus MB uses the USB3.0 chip from another manufacturer as my MB is an MSI Z77 mpower and it uses the Renesas chip. My USB3.0 did not work properly until I updated the firmware for it.

Good luck !!!

topgundcp, thanks for the reply!

I downloaded the latest zipped chipset for this PC from ASUS and it is slightly newer than what is installed (according to Device Manager/Properties/Driver/Driver Version). I saved it on my D: drive and uncompressed it, then ran the ASUSSetup.exe program from there. According to Device Manager, the version that was previously there was Intel (rather than Microsoft) 9.3.0.1024. The slightly newer version on my ASUS Support page is Intel 9.3.0.1025.

When I ran the ASUSSetup.exe and it finished, I expected to find version 9.3.0.1025, but found the previous version was still there. After shutting down the PC and restarting it, I rechecked and got the same result, indicating that it was not updated. I went into Device Manager/Properties/Driver/Update Driver and pointed it to the set of subdirectories where the uncompressed files were and it came back with a message that my driver is up to date!

So what am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Frank

You did nothing wrong. Sometimes the chipset driver does not get installed properly. Try to right click on ASUSSetup.exe to see if you can unzip it to a folder, open device manager then right click on the chipset->update driver, and select Browse My computer for driver and maneuver to the folder where you have the chipset drivers stored.

BTW, does your MB use Intel Chipset ? if so, you might want to download the latest version from Intel which is: 9.4.0.126

I recently bought one of those pci express cards with two external ports and a twenty pin internal connector and Win 8.1 pro 64 had installed the correct drivers before I had time to put the mini cd into the drive.

You might try deleting the driver in device manager and then restarting the pc, hopefully Windows will find drivers automatically.

FWIW it seems to me that windows assigns the lowest letter available. But if you then try to use another drive you have assigned a drive letter to and this letter has been used previously this session (since rebooting) then it will not mount.

For example I have 2 partitions on a SATA drive in my docking station I've assigned to be D and E. If I undock and put a USB in my laptop it is assigned D. If I then remove the USB and re-dock the laptop then E is mounted but I have to go back into disk management to assign the D partition again.

I'm not sure if this is what is happening to you but sounds pretty similar.

it sounds like the drives just came unformated and you needed to assign a letter to them. also yes it gives it the lowest letter that is available and can cause problems if you have a situation like adamf describes. you have to assign all your drives their own letter to make it not do that.

Somehow, it "remembers" only this one external drive as drive letter "J:". If I unplug this drive and plug in another external drive, I get my original problem (musical sound indicating PnP happened but no drive appears in File Explorer, but it does show up in Disk Management without a drive letter).

If I shutdown, after I restart and plug in the original external drive that I gave "J:" to, it will again show in File Explorer - so it somehow remembers across shutdowns!

The reason I gave it letter "J:" is because my internal drive has two partitions, each of which has a drive letter (C: and D:). I also have 4 USB drives built-in (they are called a 16-1 Card Reader and can read compact flash cards, etc.), which take up drive letters E:, F:, G:, and H:. I'm thinking it might be better to assign drive letters from Z: and work backward, in case I every add another internal drive or add partitions.......

What is frustrating is that I never had this problem in Windows 8.0! It all started when I downloaded Windows 8.1 from the Store. Also, I rarely had any entries in the Administrative Event Log when I was using Windows 8.0, but now Windows 8.1 continually floods the Log with "Critical" and "Warning" errors......but the PC continues to operate as if no errors are occurring.......

Thanks for continuing to stay involved with this thread,
Frank

have you assigned a letter to the second drive yet though, it wont work till you do that. after you do that see if both drives can be found after shutdown. Are you trying to make them the same so that you can swap them out for a backup schedule? if so make each of them the same letter but not while both are in the computer and you can only then have one in at a time after that to have them both in you would have to make one a different letter again.
hope this makes sense to you

EDIT: also you should post a screenshot of the errors you see in event log they me be nothing to worry about and they may be problems with your usb ports who knows we can help you better if we can see what they entail.

EDIT 2: also is this your PC CM6870 - Desktops - ASUS since that does not even have drivers out for 8.1 atm at least not through asus.

Reply to RVCJEW

RVCJEW, I believe that the external drives are formatted and ready for immediate use because when this desktop PC had Windows 8.0 on it (and everything ran fine), I plugged one in and it registered and automatically assigned a drive letter - when I unplugged it after running a Paragon backup, it released the drive letter (as PnP is supposed to do). What is different is that the USB ports that have this problem are USB 3.0 - if I plug in a stick drive to a USB 2.0 port a drive letter is assigned and I see it in File Explorer. Alternatively, USB 3.0 is a newer technology/standard and these are the ports I'm having problems with in Windows 8.1 (no problems with them in Windows 8.0).

My longer-term goal is to alternate backups between external drives, perhaps using Task Scheduler. By setting each external drive up with its own drive letter assigned, I could leave both plugged in and let Task Scheduler use the drive it needs at that time.

In answer to whether CM6870 - Desktops - ASUS is my system -yes it is. This is the first time I've purchased an ASUS PC, and to say I'm underwhelmed by the lack of detail and support material on their support page, as well as the lack of ability to purchase recovery disks, as well as the lack of ASUS programs that can be re-installed if I re-install Windows from scratch.......I guess I came to expect these basic things when I bought/used Dell & HP PCs & don't think now that I would recommend ASUS PCs to anyone - the crap they have for support is not well thought out (before retiring, I used to manage a Help Desk/Field Engineering group, so I'm aware of what should be available).

The USB problem was preventing me from doing any backups before I reformat C: and re-install a full retail copy of Windows 8.1, in hopes that it will eliminate nearly all of the problems occurring with this ******* download of Windows 8.1 Upgrade!

To be honest, I didn't think about the lack of drivers for Windows 8.1, as I felt that the drivers for Windows 8.0 should be close enough - to think that Microsoft would throw out the kitchen sink along with the bathwater just boggles the mind (and I've been with them every since DOS 1.0 and the first version of Windows)! If Windows 8.1 is such a major change to all of the low-level drivers, then it should have been named Windows 9.0, rather than 8.1! All of these hardware manufacturers have had plenty of time to release newer drivers for Windows 8.1 if they needed to, so I'm not convinced that all of the problems reported on Microsoft's various website and other semi-technical websites (such as EIGHTForums, etc.) are solvable with the newest drivers (there's more going on under the hood or Microsoft didn't adequately test before release) - the method we all use to solve problems is to try those things that may be under our control and using a systematic approach (generally vary only one thing at a time). Unfortunately, the current implementations of OS's (Apple and Unix with its many flavors included) have grown into such monstrosities that it's nearly impossible to understand what affects what - it's like the difference between troubleshooting older cars before computers were integrated and needing much more expensive equipment to troubleshoot today's cars.....

Anyhow, thanks for your input,
Frank

yeah 8.1 is a new animal it seems al ot of stuff is not supported for it atm that is why i restored a win 8 pro backup i had as my laptop for work can not be in any way unstable (i had to flash a bios update to my video card to have it work with 8.1 forget that lol). i have not had any issues with 8. my advice to you is to go back to 8 and stay there and to not use the start screen you can use classic shell i highly recommend it. i hope you have a backup you can restore to get your system back in order.

In your last comment you said "....select Browse My computer for driver and maneuver to the folder where you have the chipset drivers stored". After downloading and uncompressing the Intel Chipset driver, I tried running the ASUSSetup.exe and it didn't appear to make the update. Following that, I did try to do the upgrade using the built-in logic in Device Manager (pointing it at the subdirectory with the driver) and it came back and said the version already installed was up to date!

Thanks for pointing out that there is a newer driver on the Intel site - I'll download it and see if I can get it installed.....if so, I check whether it corrects this USB 3.0 problem.

Thanks,
Frank

The most current Intel Chip update (your link) has the following warning near the end of the description:

**Important**
The Intel Chipset Device Software does not install drivers for AGP or USB. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS UTILITY IF YOUR DEVICE MANUFACTURER IS RECOMMENDING IT TO CORRECT AN "AGP DRIVER," "AGP GART," OR "USB DRIVER" ISSUE; IT WILL NOT CORRECT YOUR ISSUE.

It says that it will not correct the USB 3.0 issue that I still have - I updated and found that to be true......I still have the problem and the only solution thus far is to assign a drive letter in Disk Management.

Any idea of which entry in "Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus controllers does affect the USB 3.0 ports - perhaps "Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 Microsoft"? If so, according to research I found, Intel says that Microsoft has that embedded now (just like Flash), so Intel has relinquished their providing a driver. The Current Date of Microsoft's driver is 8/21/2013 and the Version is 6.3.9600.16384 and if I try to update it, it comes back with a message stating that "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date".

Thanks,
Frank

Try installing Mini Tool Partition Wizard, it often sees drives which are invisible to Windows, I prefer it for disc management. I have three pc's with 8.1 pro 64, I took advantage of the cheap prices and put XP on to upgrade to 8. The Asus board manual says NEC usb chip which with 8.1 shows as VIA (0096) Microsoft generic drivers. I also have a card which shows as Renesas (0096) Microsoft generic drivers. This pc also runs XP and 7 running the usb3 from cd loaded drivers. The Asrock motherboard pc has Asmedia chip ASM1042 and the Gigabyte motherboard pc has Etron chip plus Renesas card. They all work with 8.1.

I don't think I really need Mini Tool Partition Wizard. My problem is that the USB 3.0 port that I plug an external drive into, chirps to indicate an event occurred in a USB 3.0 port (plugging in the USB drive), but when I start File Explorer, the external drive isn't shown. However, if I look in Disk Management I do see it and can assign a drive letter to it, which does subsequently show in File Explorer.

I bought this ASUS desktop PC in mid-September, 2013 and it came with Windows 8.0 on it - everything ran perfectly, including plugging in external drives to USB 3.0 ports, so I know it was possible in Windows 8.0. Now that I've shot myself in the foot by upgrading to Windows 8.1, that USB 3.0 connection seems to be partially/completely broke (among my many other configuration problems). Microsoft seems to be managing the USB 3.0 ports (looking in Device Manager's Universal Serial Bus controller entry shows Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 Microsoft, which has a Microsoft driver that is up to date and Intel says Microsoft has assumed responsibility for it).

Anyhow, it's broke and I've not been able to find a permanent fix for it, other than this work-around that I described in an earlier part of this overall thread.

Thanks for the suggestion though,
Frank

fallen can you install this(the trial is fine) for us and then post a screen shot of your pci area as shown like mine below. it will show what exact usb 3.0 hardware your using. which will help us find you drivers that should fix your issue. Also do you have turbo or normal selected under usb3 boost in the AI suite if you have it?

Hopefully, I've attached the Aida64 screenshot and shown what is useful for USB 3.0.

I have AI Suite II, which does not have any entries pertaining to Boost. None of the selections in AI Suite II have anything related to USB (regardless of whether it is 2.0 or 3.0).

Thanks,
Frank
