Solved Backlight turns off

This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen.
I have an HP Elitebook 8460p and recently updated my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.
Now when I have certain windows open and focused (it's always different, sometimes it's chrome, sometimes it's the control-panel and so on, there is no clear pattern) the backlight of the screen is completely turned off - when I take a torch and point it to the screen or hold it to a bright-light source I can see there is still a picture there you can even work (or better said you cuold if you'd see anything). When I tab to certain other windows the screen goes back to normal back light - I can then tab back to the other window and the backlight will be turned off again.
I have no idea what's going on and also no idea what information you need. The display-adapter I got is the AMD Radeon HD 6400M - I tried updating to the newest driver but that didn't help.

Any help is appreciated!

Here's a video of the whole thing:

It almost sounds like a switchable graphics issue and that would point towards a graphics driver issue in general. So, I did some research and I noticed the latest driver download (directly from AMD) is not compatible with a switchable graphics configuration:

Moreover, I was really confused when I tried to locate your graphic drivers and I found they were all Intel versions based on your model number.

Select a product - HP Support Center

Anyway, good luck in resolving your issue.

Hello and thanks for responding.

I just searched around and found my specs:
Spezifikationen: HP 8460p - Pro - Home

So it looks like the card is an AMD Radeon HD 6470M.

Maybe this helps.

Yes, your reference is quite different than the one I found at the HP site. Anyway, it looks like the switchable graphics is not applicable here so I'm a bit lost as to what to specifically suggest next otther than making sure you are running the latest BIOS and making sure all drivers have been updated in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. I also saw some mention about a back-light toggle option and hot key options that you might like to explore as well; however, I'm not sure if you even have those and, if so, how they would be managed. I'd check my owner's manual for any references, and if all else fails, you may end up back at you manufacturer's support group to sort this out. Good luck.

Somehow I just found out how it works!

The problem occurs only if there is too much "white" on the screen. For example if I open paint and make the background black nothign happens, if I change it to white, the backlight is gone.

Now it really sounds like a driver issue to me! Can you try uninstalling the AMD graphics driver and see if it will run OK on the default Win 8.1 VGA driver? I know things might not look that good but I think this test is necessary.

Update:

Alternatively, you can also try this AMD utility to automatically check to make sure you are using the latest recommended driver:

AMD Driver Autodetect

You also might want to see if Windows Update lists an "optional" graphic driver download too!

Good luck.
