Solved How to enable "Hard Drive Failure Imminent" messages

I've just built a new computer that has a 2nd hand HDD as the secondary drive. It was causing messages to appear like "Hard drive failure imminent - do you want to back up the drive". Since I was still setting up everything on the primary drive I disabled the messages by clicking "Do not show these messages again". Now I realise I should enable the message and remove the offending HDD. I'm running windows 8.1.

How do I re-enable these messages?

Hi chrisg42,

Any chance you unchecked this Maintenance Option in the Action Center. i can't say for sure but it might be worth checking. seems like it might be somehow tied to a periodic SMART check:

Yeah - I think that was what I was looking for. Between making the initial post and seeing your reply I upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1. This reset all the messages so after the upgrade I was seeing the message again.
