Solved Laptop screen brightness won't adjust

Hey everyone, I don't know if you know me, but I was Wii Master 64 on Seven Forums, so, it's good to be here! I decided to change my name, but I couldn't think of anything better, so I just went with what it is lol.

Anyways, I about a month or 2 ago, I went and bought a new laptop since my old one was starting to die on me and stuff. It's a Samsung ATIV Book 4, and it's really nice. This is the first hick up I've had with it so far, and I noticed it happening today. I noticed my screen was really dim today as I was using it, so naturally, I use the Fn key to turn it up, but nothing happens. Up in the top left of the screen, it shows a little brightness meter going up and down as I turn it up and down, but nothing changes. I went to the power options menu and tried to adjust it there, and alas, nothing happened. I googled this problem to see what I could find, but nothing really helped... I even tried disabling the display driver and restarting it, but that didn't do anything. What do you all think?

Thanks for the reply, I tried everything in that tutorial, but nothing happens. I'm wondering if it's an issue with the screen itself, but I haven't abused it or anything

It sounds like you may be missing a driver. You might check to see if you're missing one that may have been removed during the update to 8.1.

It says that all of the drivers are functioning correctly, so I don't know which one it would be. I tried a system restore, but it just froze it into a brighter state...

Well, I fixed it by going back to the previous driver I had installed. Apparently, my driver updated itself today without me knowing lol. Apparently, there's some sort of incompatibility between the new driver and my computer. Oh well, I'll just wait for a fix. Thanks for the help!

Yeah, it was an update to the Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver. More specifically, it was the 10.18.10.3316 version that was incompatible.

Thank you Brink, i made an account just to see how i could fix the issue as well haha, but he did mention that the newer intel driver was faulty and that he went back to the previous driver which then solved the problem. All i wanted to know was what was the previous driver.. because I'm trying to see if it would help me with the same problem too.

Brightness Issue Fixed

Hey everyone. I was also having this same problem except there was not an option for me to revert back to my previous driver. My problem was also with the Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver. Version 10.18.10.3316. All I did to mine was disable the driver and the enable it again after a minute. It fixed the brightness issues and I haven't had any problems with it since.

For the benefit of others, I came to find out why I couldn't dim and That Guy you were dead on accurate with your statement. I tried the tip from Insidious Krypt, but it didn't work for me. I tried the Intel site, but it wouldn't let me install an older driver. So I went to the Lenovo site, the manufacturer of my laptop, and downloaded the older driver from there. The installation hadn't yet completed when my display started to dim. I have renamed the saved old driver to something I can easily find and recognize it's purpose just in case I forget and allow the driver to be updated again.
Thanks again guys, you saved me what would have been hours and hours of searching for the problem!

That's a common problem when upgrading to a newer version of Windows. Microsoft decides that your drivers are outdated and replaces them with newer from Windows Update. One bad thing about it is that you are never asked to agree, it is done automatically. The other bad thing is that Microsoft drivers almost always offer very basic functionality and take advantage of very little of your expensive hardware. I always prefer to install latest OEM drivers (e.g. Intel, nVidia, Realtek etc) to take advantage of 100% of the hardware and of course have the best possible performance. This is far better even if they are older than latest Microsoft drivers. Don't forget to also install DirectX 9.0c runtime. Even though Windows 8 have 11.1 most games look for specific files from DirectX 9 and fail to load or don't work properly if you haven't these installed. This is also true for Windows Vista and 7 either 32-bit or 64-bit. So make sure you also install DirectX 9.0c runtime. Many photo and video applications require it too.

PS: I almost forgot! When installing DirectX 9.0c runtime in Windows 8 or 8.1, you may be prompted to also install Microsoft dotNET 2 and 3 support. Of course you do it, otherwise it won't work properly and you may have problems! Depending on the DirectX components a game of application attempts to load, you may also be prompted to install DirectPlay support. Yes, of course, go ahead! Missing any of the two will make DirectX installation not working properly and you could have compatibility problems in games, so beware! With today's large hard disks with plenty of space, you won't miss some extra MBs required for these components.

Thanks again guys, you saved me what would have been hours and hours of searching for the problem!

If you go at Intel's site, support, drivers download, you see two options. One is to automatically update the drivers. This will always install latest ones (if any) no matter if they do work or not. The other option is to manually search for the driver (if you know which model it is) and download it. In the results you get the latest version, and at least one previous version. I would try first latest version, and if it does not work properly, I would try the previous version. Of course you select Windows 8 or 8.1, not any earlier Windows version, unless the model is old and there isn't a Windows 8 version. Every time you want to install a different version of the driver, make sure you uninstall the current version first and restart your computer. Then start installing the other version, not on top of the previous installation! This ensures the install completes successfully without any issues. You may also need to disable your antivirus so as not to interrupt the installation. Always run the setup as Administrator to give full access to your system and avoid problems related to security settings (e.g. a file failing to copy to a system folder).

I am extremely technologically impaired and having this same issue. I also have a Samsung laptop, got it last Christmas, so it's pretty new, and just upgraded to Windows 8.1 a few days ago. Then my laptop screen got dim and couldn't be adjusted. I was able to successfully go to the Intel site and upgrade my Intel HD Graphics 4000 adapter. That didn't work, so I just uninstalled the driver again and was going to try the prior version. However... when I uninstalled, voila, my screen suddenly got bright again. So now I'm wondering if I have to have the driver? Computer seems to be working fine without it. I just don't want to keep having to install/uninstall if there is no need for this.
