So, I installed Windows 8.1 x64 from the Windows Store yesterday and now my QB-35US3 Hard-drives keep randomly disconnecting and connecting again. I had no problems before the upgrade. The bay is connected via USB 3.0.

Any ideas? I attached the SF Tool files.

I completely reinstalled my system with Windows 8.1 and the error persists. What did they change from 8 to 8.1?

I am sorry to say that MSDN blog workaround doesn't work at all in my system...

Finally the workaround was successful for me too, after uninstalling and reinstalling (using scan hardware changes) usb mass storage in device manager...

I found this thread and thought the solution to my problem had been found. New system: Asus desktop Model M51AD. Windows 8.1 with all updates current. Two external drives on USB ports, one is WD, several years old, the other Seagate, 2T new. Both connect and disconnect randomly, but work fine on USB 2.0 ports. The file USBSTOR.SYS is dated 8/30/2014 (modified) Version 6.3.9600.17331. According to the link a few messages back, that should be good enough. I have completed all the power options suggested and still no luck. I've been in touch with ASUS and heard everything from "I've never heard of anyone having that problem before" to why don't you update your BIOS and "try" that. In addition, while these drives, one or both, are connected to the USB 3.0 port(s), it puts a strain on this system to where the mouse is difficult to control and any action I try to perform with the mouse, like drag and drop or moving a window is very difficult. I have my external drives connected to USB 2.0 ports now to keep my backups running. The system backup would not complete or even get very far, the log told me "lost connection."
Does anyone have any more suggestions?
Thank you all.
