Hello,

Got a problem with printers on my installation of win 8 64bit. I have installed and configured two printers (via TCP/IP ports) and they print ok from applications but nothing shows up in Devices and Printers. I can see the printers in printmanager and from word/illustrator, but not control panel.

Can anyone suggest how to remedy this please. I need to add printer settings for some specialist papers that we've been given by our supplier, and their app that installs the settings wont function with out detecting the printer in Devices and Printers.

Thanks

Matt

I can see the printers in printmanager

I only have a local printer but I'd be curious to see what happens when you right-click that printer and select properties in Print Manager because all of my options are also available via that view as well:

Hi my2cents,

yes I can see the properties in that window, but I need to have the printers viewable in devices and printers otherwise the auto installer for the media settings doesn't recognise the printer and therefore won't install the paper settings. I also need them viewable there as I work with disabled adults and they need to access the printers. I don't want them having to go to print manager to select options, it will cause a lot of confusion. Also there's no option to set a printer as default there.

OK, now I get it! Thanks for that explanation. Since I don't know what you specifically tried, I will start off with a simple suggestion. Now, even though they are known to work, step one (for me) would be to go into Devices and Printers and have Windows search for (eg, rediscover) them from an installation and configuration standpoint. So, have you tried the "Add Printer" function yet?

Yeah I have tried this, it finds the all of printers on the network automatically (two are the same as the ones I installed via a manual port but have a different name) However if I go through the process if installing just for kicks, it still does not appear in device and printers.

sounds like a bug to me...

Quite possibly; however, I still think there has to be a way to fix this. I can remember having issues with a local printer continually going off-line and I finally figured out it was because I didn't install it properly. Specifically, in my case, I was just plugging it in, allowing Windows 8 to detect it, and then installing the drivers. Now, I have seen that method work in many cases; however, sometimes, you just have to follow the manufacturer's recommended installation procedure which, in my case was:

1. Start the installation software FIRST
2. Wait for the installation prompt to plug in the USB connection and THEN turn power ON
3. Follow the prompts to complete the installation

Note: I know your situation is different but recommended installation procedure should still apply.

This fixed my issue and I can't technically state why; however, I would suggest you do a clean uninstall (printers) and then a clean reinstall (following the manufacturer's recommended installation steps) to see if that fixes your issue. Anyway, if you are satisfied that it is a bug, it might be so, but Id give my suggestion a whirl to see what happens. Good luck.

Also, I can only assume that you have found the proper Win 8 drivers. And make sure that all entries are removed from the print manager before doing a reinstall if you choose to do so.

Sorry my2cents, still no luck. I've removed the driver, printer and ports and re-installed from usb lead. It installs automatically but nothing shows up in Devices & printers at all. The ultimate silent install! There's no sign from the machine that anything is happening, but a usb printer shows up on printermanager!

Well, at least you tried it. So, it sounds like it may be a bug as you surmised; however, I'd make one last call to... hey wait? Did you ever identify the specific model numbers of the printers in question? If so, I sure missed that information. Anyway, if you would like to add that information, it might be helpful for others to realize those models may have a bug. Also, I think you are armed with enough information at this point to go back to manufacturing support and continue you inquiry there. If there's a bug, I'm sure they already know about it. Good luck.

A small suggestion, dont know if it works.

When my printer wont show up in word or control panel I restart the print spooler service.

Go to start and type device manager In device manager open services and search for a service called print spooler. Look at the left upper corner of the window and press restart the service. Chances are small it works but you could try..
