Specs:
Motherboard: Asus M5A99X Evo
CPU: AMD FX-6200 & AMD Athlon 2X
GPU: Asus Radeon HD 7870 DCUII
PSU: OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W
RAM: Corsair Vengance 4GBX2 1600MHz
SSD/HDD: OCZ Agility 3 120GB & Seagate Barracuda 3TB

So I bought a new HDD (3TB) and a new chassis (Fractal Design R4) for my about 1 year old system. Everything was working fine untill I came home from school and I had left the system on, and the screen was black (This was three days after I changed the new parts). I tried to reset by the reset button, but it didn't work, so I turned off the Power Supply and back on. But I didn't get a post screen. The CPU led on the mobo was lighting red. I assumed the CPU had died, since I OC'ed it when it was already factory OC'd. So I tried my friends Athlon X2 CPU, but it still wouldn't boot and the CPU led was still red. Is the problem my motherboard?

  1. Double check all the cables: power, sata etc...
  2. Do you have anything to test the PSU ? if not, try another PSU
  3. To make sure there's no short, you can try to take the MB out of the case and boot up from there with the OS HD only

I've checked the cables, and anyway it worked fine earlier that day (without changing anything on the cables), the PSU should be fine because the fans are all running ok, and why would it help to take the motherboard out of the case and try to boot up the Drive with the OS if I get no post-screen?

This is part of isolation the problem to make sure your MB is not shorted somewhere inside the case.

Can you describe what you mean by "shorted"?

what does your mobo manual say about the error light, is it constant or flashing?

It's constantly flashing. I'll check the manual when I come home.

Problem solved. I don't what I did. I just started messing around with the components, and I touched some of the cables because they were in the way, and all of a sudden the CPU red light goes off, and the system boots normally. I'm very happy, but still very frustrating to not know what the problem was.

I am glad you got it working and back to my suggestion: you got a short somewhere in the case and you should take a close look of everything and re-organize all cables.

Yeah, I was supposed to re-organize the cables, but I didn't even have to disconnect some of them before it booted. :p
I tried earlier to connect only the OS Drive, and 1 og the RAM sticks, but that didn't work.

Definately sounds like either a short or a loose cable causing issues.
