Thanks to this great forum I was able to install Win 8.1 on my laptop (Dell Studio XP 1340).
Resolved here: http://www.eightforums.com/installa...1-rtm-installation-fails-dell-xps-1340-a.html
As per advice I got here I had to disable Bluetooth in BIOS to be able to install the system.

Now with the system up and running I would like to use Bluetooth. The device is not listed in Device Manager and no driver was installed. When I enable it in BIOS system will not start, it crashes with error (https://www.dropbox.com/s/l8ith0xljhq7xsu/2013-09-11 20.34.11.jpg).

I found the driver which should be installed. So with Bluetooth still disabled I tried to install it. It's in exe so I can't really get the driver files. The SW asks for Bluetooth to be activated by a switch. I have a button which normally turns Wifi+Bluetooth on/of .. but with BT disabled it does not work, obviously. And the only option is 'Cancel':
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jq2ei0zhmp0aevo/BT install.jpg

Any ideas or experience with this?
Thank you!

I don't suppose the .exe is a compressed folder with a self extractor? If so, you might be able to open it with something like 7Zip and see the files inside.

I tried this. 7zip extracts the file Network_Application_C71DK_WN_12.0_A02.EXE and the result is Setup.exe, mup.xml and package.xml.

The I did the same with Setup.exe. It extracts a few files like .data, .rdata, .reloc, .text. The most interesting one is named [0] with size of 177MB (this is the file name, with no extension). There is also folder .rsc which contains folders like bitmat, cursor, dialog, group_cursor, group_icon, icon, manifest, version and file string.txt.

When I view the file [0] with file lister it's just bunch of non-sense characters. When I scrolled to very end of the file I see text like Win64\btwavdt.inf or Win64\BtwRSupportService.exe ..so it's definitely the file with the drivers. But how to get those?
In file lister I also noticed "LYME_SFX" at the very end of the file. Didn't find much info on the internet though. This is the best info I get UnLyme - LYME_SFX extraction perl script. So will try this.

Yes, I saw your thread before posting mine. But did not really help. Thanks anyway.

OK, Bluetooth works now .. but there is still a small glitch :)

What I did:
Rebooted, enabling BT in BIOS. That gave me BSOD error, same as during installation. But this time minidump was created.
Disabled BT in BIOS again and got back to Windows.
I used Nir Sofer BlueScreenView to view it. It showed error with athwnx.sys. I found some Win8 drivers for Dell Wireless 1515 - Atheros 10.0.0.251. There was no athwnx.sys, only athw8.sys or athw8x.sys.
So I've overwritten athwx.sys in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ with athw8x.sys.
Rebooted again, enabling BT. Windows started! But device Dell Wireless 1515 Wireless N-Adapter was now not working. So no internet connection.
Anyway I installed the BT drivers from Network_Application_C71DK_WN_12.0_A02.EXE which I found earlier, described to work.
Installation went ok now. BT works - I was able to pair the laptop with my phone.

However - and here is the glitch - my wifi is still not working, currently connected with cable :)

Now I need to find out which drivers to use so both Wifi and BT are working..

I've read elsewhere that manually deleting files from the system32\drivers folder can cause problems.

When you finally got the 8.1 install to work, I don't suppose you turned off the "automatically get device drivers, apps and info for new devices" setting at step 13 or whatever it was?

You might find that if you did that, it doesn't install any Wifi or Bluetooth drivers and you can install the correct ones manually (perhaps download these, and also the wired network drivers, from the correct website first and save onto a USB or something).

The downside is that you'd need to run the install again (probably for the 38th time!).

No, I did not turn off automatic driver download. But with Bluetooth disabled it found the driver for Dell Wireless 1515 card ok. Driver provider is Microsoft, version 3.0.1.155.

I also used other driver as mentioned in my post above - with this Bluetooth works ok but Wifi does not.
So, I guess I "just" need to find correct driver for Dell Wireless 1515 card.

I woudn't mind installing the system again..

A small update regarding BT problems on my Studio XPS 1340. So far I use Win 8.1 with BT disabled in BIOS. I only get BSOD when I want to shut down my laptop and then it restarts. I am kind of used to it :(
What I did now is I enabled BT in BIOS and disabled WiFi. I was able to install drivers no problem, pair laptop with my phone and transfer files with no problems whatsoever.

Then when I enable Wifi in BIOS (leaving BT enabled too) Win 8.1 is starting up to login screen and then BSOD. Then from dump logs I can see the Atheros (= Wifi) driver is the problem.

So yes, it's the Wireless driver I am waiting for..

Alright, good news.. Now I have both Wifi and BT working on my laptop, hurray!
Here is what I did:
- I had Win 8.1 running for some time already but since the installation BT had to be disabled in BIOS
- I disabled Wifi in BIOS and enabled BT
- Booted to Win no problem
- Connected via LAN, downloaded the latest driver package from broadcom.com and installed
- BT was working ok now
- When both Wifi and BT are enabled in BIOS (at this stage) system will only boot to log screen, followed by BSOD and reboot
- Disabled BT in BIOS and enabled Wifi again
- Installed driver 8.0.0.239 (for Win 7 x64) for Wifi
- Re-enabled BT in BIOS, leaving Wifi enabled too

.. and whoala! It works! (tested pairing and file transfers)

Could be probably done some other way. It took me a while to figure out the correct combination of drivers which would not cause conflicts.

Still getting BSOD & reboot when shutting down the laptop, with message UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP. But that is for a different thread, I guess.. So, marking this thread as solved..

Thanks for providing more details on BT driver install

Hi, himi420

Thanks to all your hard work I was able to install Windows 8.1 Pro on my Dell XPS-1340, which appears to have the same wireless setup as yours: Dell 1515 Wireless-N card with Dell 370 embedded Bluetooth.

However, it would help me a lot if you'd provide more details on exactly what you did to get BT up and running. I downloaded the only BT setup package from Broadcomm that I could find, SetupBtwDownloadSE.exe. When I boot with BT enabled and WiFi disabled and run this package, the software says that it's unable to detect a Bluetooth device even though my BT mouse works and the BT icon shows as lit on the front left edge of my Dell XPS-1340.

In Network settings, I see only my Ethernet card adapter, no WiFi (as should be) and no BT.

It seems tryihg to read between the lines that you manually extracted a BT driver from a Broadcomm download using 7Zip. But more details on where you go the download (link and name?) and how you installed might help get me up and running.

TIA!

Hi guys,

I think I got it to work and have procedure. I pretty much had the same experience as himi420 and discovered to turn-off bluetooth to get 8.1 installed in my XPS13.

Debugged and found he same driver problems. Searching the web found this post and all started to make some sense except that when I read himi420's steps and behavior I also suspected it would work with either but not with both until both are upgraded.

Got WIFI off and Bluetooth ON. It booted.

Using a mobile adapter, got the Bluetooth Upgrade software and it did not discovered my adapter at first, at the third attempt it did. Did not work .

I switched my attention to WIFI and proceeded to install the DELL A02-3 version of the 1515 adapter from here:

Driver Details | Dell US

After that computer had the Broadcomm upgrade and the Wireless upgrade, booted with both enabled but Bluetooth adapter went missing from the device manager.

To get it back I did install the DELL 380 driver as available here (Do the recommended 380 one and don't do Broadcomm this time)

Dell Wireless and Bluetooth Drivers - Windows 7/8 - Networking, Internet, Wireless Forum - Networking, Internet, Wireless - Dell Community

Got both adapters visible again, wireless working but Bluetooth would not turn on in the Windows software setup.

Having both up, I ran the Broadcomm Bluetooth upgrade again which found the now visible adapter and completed a new upgrade.

This time it properly asked for reboot. Reboot it and now works as it did yesterday with Windows 8 and the old W7 drivers.

PERFECT!!

So I think it is like this:

1) Disable Bluetooth in BIOS, keep wifi and Run WiFi latest 1515 driver from Dell
2) Disable Wifi enable BT and Run Broadcomm Upgrade with alternate network
3) Enable both in Bios, install Latest W8 BT adapter software from DELL.
4) Run Broadcomm Upgrade Tool one more time.

Hope it helps!

Success, Dell 380 BT, then Dell 8.0.0.239, A03-2 WiFi Drvr

I too have success following himi420's advice now but independently taking a route somewhat similar to Orlando's.

I couldn't get the Broadcom package to detect any BT device. Someone on the Dell web site recommended installing the Dell BT package for the 380 card to address a similar problem for a Win8 user. I downloaded the 380 driver set for an Alienware M18x R2 (v6.5.1.2501, A00, for Win7 x64).

The package ran and Lo and Behold, a BT icon appeared in SysTray replete with rightclick menu options. Also in Device Manager, a Generic Bluetooth enumerator or device(forget which) and the Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator appeared (never had before after install of Win8.1 with BT shutoff in BIOS. BUT, then a little message popped up saying that Windows had detected the software I had installed was incompatible with the OS. The BT icon disappeared in the SysTray but still had BT devices in SysTray except the Generic BT device (or enumerator) now was a Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth mini-card, 12.0.0.8041vers., signed 9/30/13 with Broadcom listed as provider. I paired my BT mouse and keyboard and had greatest success using Control Panel Devices and Printers applet, Add Device rather than the Start Screen, Charms, Change PC Settings, BT panel.

Following himi420's advice, I went to BIOS, turned off BT, turned on WiFi. I've found if I don't completely power down before rebooting, I still get a BSOD even though the BT is off in the BIOS. Must be card still has juice in it and some memory of previous state. So I pull the power cord (am running with no battery) and hold the power button down at least 10 sec let capacitance drain or whatever.

I then installed the Win7 x65 Dell 1515 driver as suggested by himi420 (vers. 8.0.0.239, A03-2, 10/22/2010). To install it, had to go to the properties of the package and I accepted the compatibility settings of Vista SP2. The package refused to install without this, terminating with a pop-up saying it wasn't designed for OS.

So thanks again to himi420 for all his troubleshooting. His basic scheme works with a slight detour in the BT setup part of it. I have never installed any Broadcom software directly from Broadcom. Whatever is installed now is probably from Win8.1 as the Dell 380 pkg is signed way back in Jan. 2013, not Sept. 2013. The Dell 380 pkg perhaps just setup a suitable Win8.1 driver replacement AND without the Dell 1515 v.8.0.0.239 pkg suggested by himi420, I get BSOD's (tried booting 2x).

So basic recipe following himi420 is:
1. Install Win8.1 with BT disabled in BIOS, WiFi on.
2. Turn on BT, turn off WiFi in BIOS (power off and drain board before rebooting)
3. Get BT working by priming it with Dell 380 pkg, let Win8.1 replace Dell 380 driver. Pair and test some BT devices.
4. Turn off BT, turn on WiFi in BIOS (power off before full reboot)
5. Run Dell 1515 8.0.0.239, A03-2 driver package using OS compatibility settings for Vista or Win7.
6. Turn on both BT and WiFi in BIOS (power off, drain board before full reboot).

Jim,

In my case after installing the latest WIFI 1515 driver from Dell, curiously enough even with the BT disabled in BIOS , Windows update offered the updated Bluetooth driver which I allowed to download and install. I tried with both adapters enabled after that but BT wasn't visible. That's why I did not mentioned it. It still needed to be "primed" with the Dell 380 windows 8 driver and then finally upgraded again by the Broadcomm update tool.

I guess these findings should guide others to the solution to get their beloved 1340's to be fully functional with Win 8.1.

One thing that really caught me is that while DELL does not provide updated drivers for our computers through the Service Tag search, but it really DOES provide them independently on an adapter/Operating system basis.

Curious to find out if there are any other upgradeable things but with my laptop running as good as it is right now with 8.1 and dual boot UBUNTU I will probably look into upgrading to a solid state drive and a T9600 cpu and enjoy it for a few more years before having to buy a full functional 8.1+ pro tablet.

Possible MCP79 Driver Problem for Dell XPS-1340 Win8.1

Hi, Orlando

The most difficult problem I had with upgrading to Win7, then Win8 with my Dell XPS-1340 laptop was the driver for the MCP79 chipset. I am still holding my breath and waiting to see if this is a problem with upgrading to Win8.1, too.

The problem was the driver supplied by Microsoft in Win7 and Win8 would periodically cause my hard disk to freeze in the ON state, 100% DISK consumption, and the computer would hang that way for several minutes. These seizures would randomly occur ranging from ~1 per hour to ~1 per day, last for several minutes each, and render the computer completely useless while in progress.

In each case, the problem was solved by reverting to an earlier MCP79 chipset driver supplied by Dell. For Windows 8, I used the 3/29/2010, v2.11, A04, R263965.exe package. I am keeping it handy for Win8.1 just in case!

It does seem with the right drivers, our Dell XPS-1340's could happily run for quite a few more years into the future. Guess Dell can't make money just updating drivers and likes planned obsolescence to sell more computers. But a company only willing to take you one OS into the future (Vista to Win7) may not be getting future computer purchases from me. Guess that's the name of the game with MS and its OEM partners. We offer a new OS but you'll (eventually) need a new computer because we don't plan on continuing to support the old hardware (even though the user will find, if lucky, with the right drivers the old hardware still works great with the new OS).

Jim

I never had any chipset problems. Did an upgrade from Vista to 7 and then upgraded to 8 and 8.1 via Web without issues on this unit. I prefer the clean installs but have not required it yet.

I also just upgraded Ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10 and went in perfectly. My bluetooth mouse does not even requires to be re-linked when i switch between the two OSs.

Problems with MCP79 Chipset Driver Were With CLEAN install

Hi, Orlando

Now that you mention it, both my upgrade from Vista to Win7 and from Win7 to Win8 were with CLEAN installs on a new partition, then the old partition was removed. Windows installer got to pick the MCP79 driver it wanted to use each time (not Dell's, I guess). So perhaps that might have been a cause of the difference between us if our Dell XPS-1340's both have identical hardware. Going to Win8.1 from Win8.0 was an upgrade in place. Might be why I haven't had any disk freezing problem yet in Win8.1 (knock on wood).

Jim,

That's extremely possible. If it hasn't locked up in a day or so after the upgrade then you must be good this time.
My system is completely functional, shows good performance and even the original Dell Bloatware works (Dell Webcam central, etc)..

I have to say it is better than new considering it all started with VISTA...

I was one of the few who used the performance indexes and I miss not being able to benchmark it now with the same tool I did before. So far it feels better than with 7 or 8 when I used to get the occasional Bill Gates breaks. Other than the Bluetooth ones during the install I have had no issues whatsoever with anything.

Hi guys,
Sorry I was not able to reply earlier, I was away. I am glad to read that my thread actually helped someone and that I am not alone in this :)

As you probably read here (and here http://www.eightforums.com/installa...1-rtm-installation-fails-dell-xps-1340-a.html and here http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...fter-wake-up-sleep-black-screen-lid-open.html) I was having a really hard time even installing Win 8.1.

Then I was just using my laptop with BT disabled for some time. But obviously I wanted to use my BT mouse & phone so I got back to that. All I did was really disable Wifi in BIOS and and enable BT. Using LAN I installed the BT drivers and also installed the said DELL drivers for Wifi (when BT disabled).

I think I forgot to mention I had automatic driver updates turned off during the time I was trying to get Wifi and BT working.

One of the remaining issues I have with the new Windows 8.1 is shutting down - getting BSOD. I have my laptop set up to request password upon start, so the reboot stops there and I can switch it off. Otherwise it would just reboot. The error I am getting is "UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP". I am guessing this is still caused by DELL Wifi driver. I am checking the support page quite often for the new drivers but no luck so far. I also check nVidia's website for the latest drivers and the version 327.23 works much better than the previous one. But obviously I will keep trying to eliminate this problem too, as I want 100% Windows 8.1 working on my laptop :)

Another issue I had (described in the thread mentioned above - waking up from sleep brings BSOD) seems to be solved now with both Wifi and BT installed and working properly.

The problem of blank screen after closing/opening the lid still remains however. I have my power button set up for Sleep. So once I open the lid and screen is still blank I press the power button to make the laptop sleep. Then I press it again to wake up. At least it works this way and I don't have to reboot.

Do you guys suffer the same problems?

Himi,

My unit is fully functional and shows no glitches of any kind after the BT problem was taken care off using the off the shelf programs from Dell and Broadcom following your discoveries. Not one reason to reboot or do anything since. All power options work, sleep/hibernate/shutdown, etc.. It feels as a brand new computer. Possibly better than some new computers!

I think you did play a bit with the .dlls in the system32/drivers directory and that may be still haunting.

Have you tried doing a clean 1515 wifi driver install from the link i shared, followed by the 380 driver provided from dell and then the Broadcomm upgrade tool including the latest Widcomm software.?

I did let Windows update itself with the 3 or 4 things that showed up in the available updates after the install.

Hope this helps.
