I/o device error

Hi everybody hope somebody out there can help me please.
I have been experiencing problems trying to back up to external hard drive this week and keep getting an I/O Error with various error messages including 0x8007045D
My Hard Drive is "G" and I can see it through my computer no problem and I also have my ITunes library on it and the ITunes music is working fine.
I am getting a message in Action Centre saying my Back Up did not complete successfully and then I have the option of Try to Run Again or change back up settings. If I select Try to Run again windows cannot find the disk or network location and if I change settings "G" does not appear. It seems Back Up has detected an error on my "G" which is preventing it from running the back up.
Also in Disk Management I am prompted to initialise a disc before logical disc manager can access it so I select MBR and I get I/O device error and disk 1/G is unknown/not initialised.
I have tried powering the external drive off/on and also disconnecting it from the computer but no difference and at present I cannot save anything to the external hard drive. There is a previous back up already on the hard drive but this is not accessible at present.
Can anybody assist me in clearing this error so I can back up again without loosing what is stored on the hard drive in particular my ITunes library.
Thanks
Paul

I had a similar problem with an external USB3.0 drive. The problem, as it turned out, was a bad USB 3.0 port on the motherboard.

My indication was; I would connect the drive and it would show the files on the drive and then Windows would give me a notification that the drive needed to be formatted. On other times it would connect, but when I tried to transfer data to the drive it would not complete. Sometimes it would give me the "drive needs formatting" error.

Have you tried a different USB port? If you are using a rear USB port, try a front USB port. If you are using a front, try a rear.

Hi firebird thanks for your advice
I followed your advice but not sure its made any difference.
Under My Computer my "G" is now showing as "Local Disk" and I can access/view files on it. This has happened before since problem started but it seems to change its status without explanation and shows "NTFS" and the drive is then unaccessible. Unplugging the drive and reconnecting changes it back to "local disk" again. I have tried running CHKDSK on the "G" but it doesn't complete because the drive becomes inaccessible again although it has found some errors on the part which actually runs. I am currently trying to copy over the data on G to my C drive with a view to reformatting the G drive.

One more thing to try. Connect the drive and then go to the Device Manager and uninstall it.

With the drive connected, go to the Device Manager, RIGHT CLICK on the entry for the Drive and then LEFT CLICK "Uninstall". Physically disconnect the drive from the PC and the restart the PC. After Windows has started, connect the drive and Windows should detect it and install it (as it would a new device). This fixes a lot of flakey problems and if lucky will fix yours.

If it connects properly, don't forget to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" when you want to disconnect it from the PC. If you disconnect without using that the Windows status can become corrupted.

One thing I missed, have you changed the USB cable? A bad cable can cause problems.

Hi All

I have tried uninstalling the drive and reinstalling as suggested above through device manager but no change.
I have reformatted the hard disk a couple of times and tried again but back up still will not run all the way although I do get some files on to the external drive but incomplete. I have tried another usb cable and different USB ports but no change.

Currently trying a back up with freeware from the net to see what happens and I can also try the hard drive in another computer to identify if its windows or the drive where the fault it.

Will post again when I have more

thanks all

Tried the hard drive on a Laptop running windows 7 and experienced the same problem. At least now I know its the hard drive which is causing the problem.
Unless anybody else has any good ideas?
