Solved Just reinstalled Windows, now I'm getting BSODs...

I reinstalled Windows to fix an earlier problem, but now I'm running into a new one. I installed the Win8 drivers for my Maximus IV mobo from the Asus site for Win8 x64 and where they didn't have Win8 versions I used the Win7 versions, since the hardware wouldn't work without the drivers (the rear USB ports didn't work, some hard drives weren't detected). I believe I have the most recent drivers possible, so I'm hoping it's not a driver issue...

Everything was working fine, so I started restoring some files last night and when I woke up this morning and turned the monitor on, the PC was unresponsive and BSOD'd after a few seconds, giving me a DPC Watchdog Violation error.

I checked Action Center for errors and noticed one that was at the time of the BSOD, copied below:

Problem: Video hardware error

Description: A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

I'm running Folding@Home, but that's never caused an issue with the system before re: overheating, etc.

I would suggest step one if you can boot open command prompt as administrator and type "sfc /scannow" without quotes to see if any problem with system files -probably takes 5-10 mins. and if any problems found problems it will fix.

If you can boot try control panel , device manager - any yellow exclamation marks , if yes right click on item and then click update driver

Otherwise

1. Boot into Windows 8 and then control panel and delete display adapter then reboot and see what happens
2. Boot into safe mode and then control panel and delete display adapter reboot and see what happens

or If you can remember what you restored remove them and restore again but one by one and see if you still get BSOD. If it works you know the restore is OK so do next one etc.

sorry if basic instructions but do not know your experience level

It boots fine and runs fine, but the BSOD concerns me - don't want to have a driver issue lurking that will BSOD randomly on me. Nothing shows up in device manager as problematic. I've got the latest Nvidia driver for my GTX580, so I'm not sure how that could cause the issue (they were installed straight after Win8). I can rollback and reinstall though and see if that helps, but I'm not sure how I'll know when it did... Perhaps running Prime95 stress test would do it? I'd think that would expose any overheating issues, but I'm not sure about driver issues. Will edit this post when I've reset the video card driver.

sfc /scannow didn't find any integrity violations...

I'm fairly experienced, but I've not been running Win8 very long and haven't seen this error before. Google searching has led to a lot of conflicting "fixes" (it's the SSD, it's your USB ports, etc) so I figured someone here might have seen this before or know whether it's really a problem with the video card or if Windows is nuts and something else caused the issue, such as USB. Not sure why it's showing USB3HUB_SUPERSPEED disabled in the error message for the video card, for example. I had problems with the USB ports after installing, but those were fixed by updating the drivers for the chipset (Win7 version, Asus doesn't have a Win8 version yet).

Hi Azaraith,

I could not agree more with Google searching everything seems to refer to your problem but non of it relates to your specific problem

Just one thought may be a waste of time but try running driver manager with norton pc checkup. may not fix problem (unless you purchase) but could possibly give you a pointer.

Also for the registry try CCleaner it is free and I have never had any loss or lockup using it

Also using windows refresh from recovery may help - you don't loose your files and settings.

Do you use a usb hub or only the usb ports from mobo ?

Best regards

Keith

I'll check out the driver manager. I already use CCleaner actually too :p I just installed, so refreshing wouldn't be that bad, but I would need to reinstall all of my programs again (those get wiped out in a refresh, but Win8 apps don't...) I've found some converging discussions on the error message w/ BCCode 144 that mention the AHCI drivers, which just might be it - I'm also seeing no TRIM support from one of my SSDs, even though all of my drives are working. The suggestion is to uninstall the drivers and use the standard AHCI drivers. I'll report back with the results once I can do that and have reset the GPU driver too.

Update: I've rolled back the AHCI driver and I'm running Prime95 right now. Crossing my fingers that I've fixed it, will mark as solved if I don't run into any problems with Prime95 or otherwise in the next day. Seems perfect right now, but not sure yet.

Norton's PC Checkup program froze my PC and then wouldn't run again when I restarted lol - that was before the driver rollback though, will give it another go in a bit. Just saw the question about USB hubs - I am only using the mobo.

This one's solved guys. The issue turned out to be the Marvell storage controller / AHCI drivers. There have been no errors or problems since I rolled them back. Thanks for the suggestions!
