UDF DVDs not playing in Windows 8 dvd player software

I have 2 DVDs that I just bought and work perfectly on my old Windows 7 laptop. They don't work on my new Dell Inspiron 3520. I'm not using Windows Media Player, I know that can't play DVDs in Windows 8. I'm using PowerDVD, it came for free with my laptop. When I play my DVD it stops responding. I tried using VLC too, but it seems as if it's stuck at loading for 1 hour. I don't think it's a codec problem because both of these are supposed to come with the codecs. The software isn't corrupted since they can run other DVDs. I have updated my drivers. My DVDs work in Windows 7, so what is my problem?

Well, looks like I'll just try Microsoft support instead since nobody's answering.

Is this an internal or external dvd drives?

Are both connected at the same time?

USB?

Are they on a hub or directly to the USB ports?

Can you send us a screencap of your device manager with the cd/dvd tab expanded?

It's an internal one. Here is a screenshot. Every dvd player app just stops responding when playing these 2 UDF DVDs. Screenshot (6).png

I just watched The Avengers with VLC, the only annoyance was not being able to skip the preview/ads I could only jump to the end of the ads then let it go to the next chapter where I skip to the end again via the slider..

My core temp did rise to 170 F and thats with the laptop elevated and in a 70 F environment.

Can you check your core temp or graphics temp?

Can you clean the dvd lense, make sure someones finger didnt touch it, it happens..

Your device manager shows fine, it identified your dvd writer...

Ill try PowerDVD and see if I get errors..

Im using Win 8 Pro

I'm trying to watch the Regular Show - Best DVD in the World. Is UDF an old file system? What file system does The Avengers have? My DVD works perfectly well in the DVD player in the car, I just played it. I believe it isn't an issue with the disc. I get consistently on every DVD player software a not responding error when I play this DVD. It works without any problems on an old laptop with Windows 7. I also just refreshed my laptop. I'm also in in an environment of 70 F. My laptop is around 120 F.

The temperature doesn't change when I play my disc. The DVD playing software just stops responding. What's my problem?

Can somebody help me? I did a factory reset and they still won't play. Everything just stops responding. It works on windows 7 pro though. Does that mean I have missing codecs? All I get is that vlc couldn't get input dvd/D:/. It says to check the log, but there isn't any log. Isn't VLC supposed to come with codecs? I'm getting really mad at Microsoft for not including the codecs. They made a lot more than they had to pay for the codecs.

Dell has a users forum. Have you tried that? Maybe someone there has an answer for you.

I'll try that, but it seems to be a problem with windows, not the hardware.

Hi there
DVD video format is different from UDF. UDF was a DATA format used primarily on DVD-RAM and some DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs so that the DVD would work essentially as another DATA disk. While DVD-RAM could also use NTFS DVD+RW and DVD-RW couldn't use NTFS so in order to make data written to these re-writable DVD's accessible to windows explorer (copy, paste, delete, create folder etc) this file system was devised.

To create Video multi-media you need to create AVI or other video codecs files - and then play these with VLC / other DVD program. You can't play a UDF disc directly as a DVD - you can play the files recorded on it though if they are in a recognized video codec.

(I.e with VLC or other DVD paying software don't use the OPEN THE DISC - Open FOLDER or OPEN FILE from the MEDIA menu).

Standard DVDs (.ISO's) will play via OPEN DISC of course. VLC has just about every possible codec built in so it should always work.

Cheers
jimbo

UDF isn't used anymore? That's weird... I could play it with any media playing software in windows 7 and it works in my DVD player. That DVD is relatively new(came out in 2013) so is it even in the UDF format? Maybe Windows is making a mistake. I tried just playing the vob files but the video looks warped, inverted and skips around. The audio also sounds weird.

The only reason I replied that way was because I wasn't sure I if providing a link was within rules. But if I'm allow to provide a link to a free program or disclose the program then I can post it public. Let me know. I was only making sure I is within the rules. Nothing to gain or promote here. I used it and it works fine viewing udf dvd's on windows 8.1. Tks

If you install the proper codec's you'll be able to view them as any iso.

Here's what you need in order to be able to play UDF Dvd's on windows 8.1. Download K - Lite 2.3.1 full version and associate the .If file to MPC. This is free to download. This will allow you to view your udf dvd's. Good luck guys!
