Windows 8 and windows 8 RT?

I know on a windows 8 RT tablet you cannot download anything other than the App Store
But I have been looking at tablets to purchase and I am a bit confused. Some say Windows 8 some windows 8 pro. I thought there were only 2 versions. RT and pro

So my question is. Can you download or install from a DVD player if you have Windows 8?
I have a copy of windows 2013 that I can download or take it from a DVD. With just windows 8 can I install it plus other exe files?

If so then why get windows 8 pro if windows 8 can do this?

I'm confused as well as I have seen reviews on my Lenovo Thinkpad 2 stating that I should be sure to get Win 8 Pro instead of just Win 8 and since the Thinkpad 2 doesn't com in an RT flavor that tells me that there must be 3 versions of Windows 8 for tablets running around currently.

1) Windows 8 RT - Only download and run apps from the Microsoft app store
2) Windows 8 - run all apps from the store and all regular Windows 7 apps/programs
3) Windows 8 Pro - So what is the difference between #2 and #3

Also are there currently any 64 bit Windows OS available for tablets?

No. Simply answer.

Windows RT is designed ONLY for the ARM processor and ARM processor only, this is why you can't install Desktop apps. The RISC instruction set is completely different than the processor instruction set on typical x86 processors. Also why there is a Windows Store.

There is a version of Windows 8 that would be technically called Windows 8 Core, but it's just Windows 8 for the sake of it. Windows 8 Pro is a different version with certain Pro features like Hyper-V.

But windows 8 is on atom processors and i3-5-7 core processor tablets. I am looking at a asus i3 one running i3 core
And so does windows 8 pro
So what does windows 8 pro have that windows 8 does not and please clarify of I can download programs like office 2013 on Windows 8. Or other exe programs

So windows 8 is like windows 7 home premium?
But again can I run office 2013 if it is on a DVD or downloadable on the Internet?

Also, semantics are actually important here and there's no such thing as "Windows 8 RT" - it's "Windows RT" because while it's the same kernel as Windows 8, it's not exactly the same OS capability-wise. As previously mentioned, an RT device has limitations on apps due to being designed for ARM, but it has benefits in greater battery life and somewhat cheaper hardware due to the ARM design as well.

Essentially, you can think of Windows 8 (Core) as just Windows 7 Home Premium basically. Windows 8 (Core) runs on every processor both AMD and Intel EXCEPT ARM processors.

This is a good thing Microsoft consolidated down versions because there are legit differences between Core and Pro.

Windows 8 Pro, it's just like Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate. In Pro, you get features like Storage Spaces, Hyper-V, BitLocker support, native Remote Desktopping, and Domain joining. There is also a side pack called Windows 8 Pro Pack, which is just that with a Media Center download. If you want any of those features, Pro is the way to go. Or at least, an upgrade to Pro is the way to go.

Windows RT is ONLY for pre-selected ARM based tablets, and will say that you can't use the Desktop to install traditional software right on the box and online description. As long as the tablet in question does not say Windows RT, yes, you can install whatever you feel like.


The AMD tablet (I bet you'll probably like that as AMD APUs have SUPERIOR graphics capabilities over Atom counterparts) you ask in question is Windows 8 (Core) 64 bit. Think of that as basically a laptop with a touchscreen slapped on top of it. What works on your laptop will work on your tablet PC. You can also try to find an .iso image of Windows 8 (Core) online, I think I can find you a link if you wish, so you can do a clean reinstall of Windows 8 (Core) as that is just easiest to get rid of the crapware that will be on it. But that is a different thread...

as long as it's not RT, it'll run Win32 (aka "regular" windows software). If it's RT, it'll only run modern/metro apps from the store and the versions of desktop software that shipped with the device (like Office).

You have Windows 8 on one of your PC's, correct? It will be just exactly like that if it makes it easier.

Ok great because the windows 8 are less expensive than the pro ones and I do not need the added features, I already have a windows pro 14" laptop to do what I need to do, and since I can put office pro on it it fits for me, now I wait and see if the pricing goes down or if there is a special, I am looking at the acer iconic w series w 700-6831 tablet. Has an intel core i3 4 gigs. Mem. 64 tv HD
Goes for $729. But since I am not in a rush I am waiting to see if it comes down on sale more

You know, if you wait it out until the newer Atom processors are released later this year, those tablet PCs will go down in price for sure. Intel claims that 200 dollars tablet PCs with their new Atom chips will be possible, although realistically it'd be around 4-500.

Well, the new Atom Bay Trail processors I don't think will be considerably faster than right now. The whole emphasis with this series is low cost, VERY low power consumption; so the main benefit I bet will be seen with those is much longer almost all day battery life. I would imagine MAYBE some tablet PCs with the Atom processors will have Windows 8 Pro, I'm not sure since some features of Pro such as Storage Spaces needs a decent processor.

But since I'm an AMD fan, I say stick to AMD APU based tablet PCs. Their next crop of APUs are claiming a lot better graphical performance, which compared to Intel, is like comparing a desktop PC to a laptop PC in terms of graphical power almost. Not quite, but you get the point. Battery life on the next generation ultramobile APU will be about on par to an Atom processor right now, so about 7-10ish hours. If given the option between the two next gen offerings of CPUs for a tablet PC, I'm going AMD all the freaking way. I personally want that because I know when I decide to buy a tablet PC later on, I know I'm going to need to graphical power for Photoshopping and AutoCADding on the go.

If you're looking for serious on the go power, I'd check out the Razer gaming tablet PC, it has a mobile i7 chip and a dedicated NVIDIA GPU.

Another thing to consider for a serious Tablet user is the Microsoft Store Developers as they develop more and more apps. Those apps are made to run and run great on these Atom processors and without going to Desktop mode. Even Office 2013 works great on my Lenovo with it's Atom processor and I use One Note all day long. I have 8 Notebooks with probably 50 tabs and maybe 200 notes so far and it is set to sync automatically to Dropbox as I use and make changes throughout the day. It flows without a hitch.

I have found several other key apps for me in the Windows Store that don't seem to require much system resources to run flawlessly. So I'm very happy with my Atom processor, 1.25 pound machine, $600 price tag, and 9 hour battery life. I would hate to lose all those features just for a little power; I might as well just pick up my trusty old 15.6 inch laptop at that point!

under those circumcstances I will wait, I am not in a rush and I would rather wait for the better processor then the atom, and I agree the Amd works better better with a tablet and is less money then the Intel Processor I's

I can definitely keep a look out for the new AMD's, as I do keep tabs on them. I may buy a tablet PC MAYBE this fall or next spring, so I'm for sure going to looking out for the AMD APU based tablets out there. Surface Pro 2 with an AMD APU? One can only hope.
