And if you want your brother to keep it, get one with Windows 7. Win 8 will ruin his computing life.

The dilemma here is, workability vs entertainment capabilities. You want to watch a movie streamed over wifi while you are doing laundry around the corner from your dorm. Buisiness oriented computers may be highly portable, but all around use, including entertainment should be key. :geek:

well, there's always a way around the entertainment stuff. you need to start with reliable machine. :D

Avoid large screens, theyre heavy and battery hogs..

Read the specs, get long battery life

Make sure the cooling vent is NOT on the bottom, make sure it draws and exhausts air from the back or the sides.
(this is a killer of laptops and batteries when it intakes or exhausts from the bottom)

Does he actually need a laptop, does he need the cd/dvd drive?
Check out windows tablets..
You can use a bluetooth KB or the touch screen
Has about a 9 hour battery life, laptops say 2 hours but its more like 1.5 and degrades rapidly in a few months.

before you buy online, physically touch them, goto a computer store and play with them, make sure theyre comforable.
big 17" laptops are not comfy.

If youre set on a laptop get a 15" screen.
