Yep it copied without any issues or problems. Now while I was fiddling around, I allowed the digital certificate to be imported.....Which it did successfully. I checked the "read only" box which it was in Windows 7.

Now I am going to reboot without a disk in the drive and try it again

Oh yea, and scanning for new hardware did nothing....with the dvd recognized of course. Last night I did the same thing without the drive being seen and it did not show anything as well.

Still the same problem. I am going to change to a different DVD drive and see if that changes anything.

If the DVD drives can't use the built-in OS supplied drivers you I think you might have to wait for the vendor to supply it.

Same issue here. Though booting with a system disc in the drive did nothing for me. I also tried an older Sony DVD drive, and again BIOS sees it fine but Windows 8 will not.

The LG drive was used in fact to burn and install Windows 8 onto this machine. so Up until Windows 8 was up and running the drive was evidently usable by the installation.

As an extra quirk here. The test machine Windows 8 was installed on, had a pre-existing Windows XP drive which was removed during installation of Windows 8 Dev Preview onto an empty hard drive.

Well If I replace the Windows XP drive, and boot into it, both DVD drives are seen and can be used.

So there's definitely something going on with Windows 8 there and its detection of optical drives.

    Hi Overload,

I agree man, after changing to a different drive, an LG, it still has the same issues. As with you, the drive is just fine in the bios as well as in Windows 7. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and Windows 8. No issues with either drive in Windows 7.

It's likely that during installation (at DOS level) the system uses generic drivers which in most cases will work. After OS installed generic drivers might not be enough hence you'll need to get additional drivers from the manufacturer.

I'm sorry no, Optical drives require no drivers outside the generic driver provided with any Operating system. They are the ultimate in plug & pay hardware. They never have, and no manufacturer provides any drivers for optical media unless they have some special function. The best you can do is download a firmware update that of course requires the drive to be detected to update.

The drive is not detected by windows at all. If it indeed perhaps required some sort of driver, it would show up in Device Manager as maybe an unknown device, it doesn't. Its simply not there at all.

There's something wrong there, and its not drivers.

I agree Overload. Heck even in the old Windows 98 days drives did not need manufacture drivers. As you mentioned, one would think that there would be an issue in the device manager. As with you I am not even seeing it at all in the device manager.

It is odd however, if I put the Windows 8 disk in the drive and boot the system up, the drive is seen. I can then remove the disk and put in any other disk and all is fine until I reboot. Once rebooted without the system disk in, it will not recognize the drive at all.

It would be nice to have some development team member chime in on this. :-)

    Windows 8 developers preview

I've just got registered here for talking about the very same problem. nothing is being able to solve it. in no way i can see the DVD drive in my drive list. By this time I've ensured that actually my BIOS can detect it can and is able to boot from it but it just disappears as soon as Windows 8 developers preview x86 is in charge of the computer. if i insert a disk, it's just taken in and the LED of the drive stop blinking and no more rotation sound or notification on screen. I installed fresh copies of windows thrice it all the time the problem's the same! any solution or suggestion out there?
