Hello I am new to this website.

I Have a problem with my Alienware m14 Laptop
I downloaded an driver update from either Nvidia or Gforce I forgot which. and during installing my laptop messed up and I can no longer get to the desktop. it is black screen and just simply shows the battery icon in the top left corner then I get signed back out to the start menu and have to re-login. I tried to re-do everything using f12 (I think its f12) during boot up and it would not allow me to do that as it said something about my driver.
I have the laptop under guarantee but is it possible to fix my self? (also this is dumb of me but I saved my passwords in notepad and was wondering how do I get them back?)

Hello Amazing, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You could try doing a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully fix it.

Hope this helps, :)

Ok. So much for the easy route. ;)

When you say "during installing my laptop messed up" what exactly did it do?

When you say you have to re-login, are you able to actually sign in to Windows 8?

If not, then you could try booting into Safe Mode or Enable low-resolution video to see if it may let you sign in to Windows 8 to uninstall the driver update.

If so, are you able to uninstall this driver update in "Programs and Features"?

the only thing it allows me to do is view the start menu but I cannot click on anything or do anything and it just logs me out.

I just installed then it restarted my computer than it messed up :(
I have been trying to get into safe mode.
the errors I am getting is this..
when I click refresh your pc:
the driver where windows is installed is locked. unlock the drive and try again.
when I click reset your pc:
unable to reset your pc. a required drive partition is missing.
when I click system restore:
to use system restore, you must specify which windows installation to restore, restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select system restore.
system image recovery and automatic repair dosent do anything..and in
command prompt and tried booting in safe mode that way and it didn't work.

I'm not sure, but sounds like you may have possibly toasted your recovery partition somehow.

Since the laptop is still under guarantee, you might see about them getting it reset for you. :(

When installing nVidia drivers, remember to choose "custom" installation and then check the box for a "clean install". This ensures the previous driver is removed before the new driver is installed. Quick Install of video drivers frequently causes problems. But to be honest, never as serious as you have described.
