Is there an internal USB3 card reader that works on W 8 64

Built a new system, all good EXCEPT memory card reader. No big deal, but I have had internal card readers on the last couple of PCs and find them convenient. Ordered a Rosewill RCR IC0001-r, found that id does not work with Win 8 /64. Started asking vendors about compatibility, not finding any solid answers. Does anyone have any info on this??

Thanks,

Stan

A lot of times the Windows 7 64 bit driver will work just fine in Windows 8. If you have already tried that then just disregard this post.;)

The device you mention does not seem to be a USB 3.0 device... Something like a card reader, especially USB 2.0 such as you have should be almost automatic. There may be some bios settings you could check to see if they would help...

Which connectors on the motherboard are you using?

Have tried both USB 2.0 and 3.0 19 pin headers. Per manufacturer, this unit will NOT work on Win 8 /64 even though the instructions say that it will. I have contacted a bunch of manufacturers and NON claim that they have an internal card reader which will work on Win 8 /64. That is why I post the question here, to se if anyone actually has one that works.

Does it have, and did you try the Windows 7 64 bit driver? You may have to install it in compatibility mode.

Thank you anyway.
I believe it is just that the hardware needs to catch up with the software.
Nothing new, I was just trying to see if there was a working unit already on the market.

Hello,
Pre-built win 8 systems come with internal card reader but I havent check write and read speeds yet. But I think USB 3.0 is useless for card readers as I don't know of any type of card media or memory sticks (except USB flash drives) that can match up to 5 or 6gbps transfer rate of the USB 3.0. The USB 2.0 might be more than enough for card readers.

To be clear, I have a 19 pin USB header on the motherboard that I can use, or I would go with a pci card type if that were the available choice. I have, and use an external card reader, but like the convenience of the internal, assuming I can find one that would work.

My Lenovo OEM reader works good in Win 8 Pro 64 bit. The computer originally came with Windows 7 64 bit. My card is listed as a Generic Multi-Card USB Device in device manager. It's using the Microsoft driver version 6.2.9200.16384 dated 6/21/2006. I would think your card should work. Did you make sure it was hooked up correctly? If it was then I would say either the USB header is bad or the reader is bad.

Your preference "USB 3.0" is useless for any card readers. Class 10 memory cards only have a maximum speed of 10mbps. Even the fastest class U1 (UHS-ultra high speed) is only 312mbps. USB 2.0 has a maximum speed of 480mbps. So you may want to forget about USB 3.0 for card readers and look for PCI options or 2.0 pin heads.

I agree.
The speed says it all. Having used an external usb2.0 card reader, I can say it is very usable, no need for 3.0 if no decent ones + cards are available yet.

I just got the same USB 2.0 internal card reader (no -r on model number). Attached it to the USB 2.0 mid-board connector 78 (9 pin) and it seems to work fine. I do notice you have to put the SD cards in upside down, at least to me it seems to be upside down. The CF cards seem to work fine right side up, and I do not have any other types.

Just in case it might be relevant, in Device Manager, on some of the Hub devices, there is a reset hub option. Under Disk drives, I also show 4 Generic entries, one for each type of memory card useable in the reader.

The 19 pin connectors are for USB 3.0, and you need a special plug to fit, which should come with a 3.0 unit.

What media are you using as far as Class or X number or U class speed designation? I have one that is SDHC 16 GB 100x, but that is only 14.6 MB/s, which is well within the USB 2.0 speed range. As long as the speed of the card is less that 40 MB/s you will not see much of a gain with USB 3.0. There are some flash cards that would rival the speed of a hard drive, but they are fairly expensive.

So, as an answer to your question, I would submit the Rosewill devices will work

First, to the Rosewill question, I had tried the USB 2.0 reader from Rosewill, Newegg site said that it WOULD work on Win 8/64, the documentation said that it would work as well. However, when installed it did not work, I called Newegg, they passed the problem to Rosewill and the Tech at Rosewill said that it is NOT compatible with Win 8/64. I found the AFT Pro-57U and have it installed on the 20-1 header, it seems to be running fine. The USB 3.0 request was in part because they also pass the port to the front, and given that my Mobo HAS the 3.0 header, I wanted to use it. The port read speeds do seem faster, even when using USB 2.0 devices. Given that almost ALL peripherals are now USB, I find that there's no such thing as too many USB ports. Hope this info saves someone from the rat hole I had to explore. Stan

that was my review. and was posted over 7 months ago. the koutech pcm630 works great in w8 x64, and w8.1 x64. It has the REALTEK RTS5176 chipset. I found the latest drivers from "station drivers". That driver is version 6.2.9200.30166 , date 27 Aug, 2013. There is a firmware upgrade as well, however, I have not completed that as of yet.

In regards to the statements about usb 3.0 card readers, I purchased this unit because besides being a card reader, it also has a usb 3.0 port, so it adds an additional usb 3.0 port to the front of my case.

I no longer have any usb 2 devices, haven't had any for almost a year now, so i cannot give performance comparisons, except to say i am extremely pleased with the usb 3 port performance, and the performance of the card reader as well. Performance varies widely from device to device, but on the usb 3 front panel port, my flash drives range from 70mbs to 120 mbs. For class 10 , uh1 sdmicro, it can be anywhere from 10mbs to 40mbs for the cards I own. the best performers have been from Gskill and Samsung.

this unit currently sells for $30 on newegg, I got mine on a shell shocker for $22.
