Lack of needed memory on flash memory Win 8 machines

I've been looking at the Surface Pro and other tablet/laptop convertible machines fitted with Win 8. The top-end models usually offer only flash memory in stead of a hard drive. The standard 128 GB flash memory available seems hopelessly inadequate for storing Win 8, a full range of programs and a decent amount of data. Most of these thin, expensive models have only one or two USB ports available. Where must the necessary memory come from? Must an external hard drive be carried along? Nothing wears a USB port out more quickly than a fairly heavy external device such as a hard drive dangling from it in mobile situations.

You can add extra storage with SD cards on some of them. It's not ideal but better than nothing I guess.

Does the Surface Pro have a slot for a SD card? How much memory does a top SD card offer and at what cost? How reliable is such a SD card, in terms of storing data over many years, compared to a hard drive? The Surface Pro is one of the most attractive options in the new category of mobile computers, due to its extreme mobility. But the lack of available memory and the limitations imposed by the single USB-port, also in terms of providing more memory, is a terrible put-off. A USB port cannot have plugs inserted and pulled out regularly, over a long period of time. It soon starts to lose grip and the pins then lose contact. With the advent of Win 8, Microsoft has improved Skydrive dramatically. But it only offers 7 GB free storage -- if you want more storage memory, you have to add Microsoft to the vendors drawing money from your bank account on a regular and permanent basis. And do you really want your valuable data floating around in "the cloud"? The limitation of memory on these Win 8 tablets / convertibles is really a bad thing. There are convertibles with a hard drive in the keyboard, e.g. the Asus Win 8 Transformer. But the cost is almost $1500.

The Surface pro only has a MICRO SDXC card slot. Surface specifications I'm not sure how big of a capacity of a Micro SD card you can get.

At Newegg, 64GB seems to be the largest microSDXC cards at the moment. Their read/write speeds are hardly in the SSD class, though.

Those are the ones that I was referring to. The fastest one that I see at a glance is from Samsung, 70/20 MB/s R/W.

Yeah, not as high speed as you might think huh. Probably good enough for media files though, mp3's or video's etc.
