Drive letter assigned to external USB disc changes random

My USB disc comes up with the letter 'J'. Because I have references to it with a letter 'X'. I want to change it and I do that in the Computer Management tool with the Disk Management utility.

Computer - Right click - Computer Management
Disk Manegement - Right-click the drive and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths
Assigne a new letter

Everything works fine but suddenly after a reboot Windows 8 loses the letter 'X' for this disc and assignes 'J' again.
I have done so with this drive for years under Windows 7 without any problems. Any idea, please what the problem might be?

While you have the USB drive connected, double check using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to see if "J" is still listed. If so, change it to use "X" instead.
