Can't seem to download or "run" programs

Hello, I sure hope I have the correct forum. I received a new pc for Christmas, Gateway with Windows 8 and IE10. I have been searching for days for an answer to my problem. Here it goes. When I have a program I want to download the screen pops up to run or save, it asks if I'd like this program to make changes to my computer and then does nothing and I mean nothing. First I "ran" the program and nothing. With experminting I decided to "save" a download. The download was in the folder downloads. I tried to run it from there and nothing. I have tried 3 different new software and even iTunes. The printer software according to their website was compatible with windows 8. So I even ran the software on their website and nothing. My tax software just doesn't do anything as well as iTunes. I thought it was maybe just taking some time, but after hours it still shows me nothing. When trying to redownload the printer says I can't because a version of that is already running. In addition I do remember downloading Silverlight and I couldn't ever see the progress and finally forgot about it. About 3 days later it showed up on my laptop. I don't get it, I talked to gateway and their only response is to download the newer versions from the websites. Doesn't help if I can't get it to download either. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank You Ramie.

Do you have the instructions for returning your computer to factory fresh (if any)? I would try to do so after carefully backing up your files. Call your OEM if you can't figure out how to return to factory fresh. If within return period, you could return your computer and get another even of the same model--if you want.

Hi, I had an issue with the general user folder name, which was shown as "Alex_000". Although this was a cosmetic issue only, I wanted to change this to "Alex". I successfully managed this by changing about 50 entries in the registry (via regedit). So fine so good.
