Black Screen Nvidia Driver

My PC was running fine, had my Geforce 9800GT running with Windows 8 Pro 64bit since December.
Today for some reason when I turned my PC on it was just black after the Windows logo, and every now and then the Start menu shows up for a few seconds but no mouse pointer or keyboard input was possible. So I downloaded latest nVidia driver 310.90 and it still has the same problem. Currently using onboard graphics and removed the 9800 from my PC. The graphic card is working I tested it in another PC with Win 7. The black screen only appears after installing nVidia driver.

Common problem with nVidia driver, roll back to the previous version, or uninstall anything related to nVidia in program's an features, uninstall the driver and let Windows install its default nVidia driver at restart, then block Windows update, driver updates.

Forgot to say you will have to get into safe mode by shutting down a few times as Windows begins to start.

Ok I uninstalled everything nVidia related from Programs&Features. Then restarted, nothing happens Windows 8 doesn't install anything, and the resolution is very low. I put my graphics card into a Win 7 system (just to see) and as it booted it asked me to restart and when restart was finished my resolution was automatically set to 1920x1080 by Win 7. Windows 8 is not doing that

Every time I have had to do this windows has auto detected the hardware. Go into device manager, look at the properties for your graphics card, update driver, install manually, select from a list, you should see nVida and under that an entry for your card with Microsoft as the diver vendor. Select that one.

Another suggestion I have seen but not tried is to download the latest driver, don't install yet, disconnect from the Internet (unplug Ethernet or turn off wireless) then restart, after restarting without Internet try installing the driver, if successful re boot again disable automatic driver updates and then reconnect to Internet.

Hope that helps.

I had many problems with nvidia and win 7 and no matter what I tried the graphics screwed up, strangely enough, was also a GTS 9800. Eventually I binned the card altogether and installed a AMD Radeon HD 6700 - since then no problems.
