Hi all, I have a sound problem after downloading Windows 8, no sound on CD, & dvd will not load, have downloaded windows media centre. Has anyone used, or does anyone recommend using any of the paid driver download sites such as Driver Navigator to fix these type of probs. I can see on this forum many, many people with similar issues. Thanks Bob

You will do well, merse your self in identifying your hardware. Read ID's, always create system restore point before installing.
It can be fun, go to piriform, download Speccy, free soft to help you ID your hardware.

Thanks Gunner. The only problem I have now is sound, because the notebook is 5 years old, and even though windows 8 said before download, everything would work after downloading, the video card is not recognised and there is no sound when playing CD's or DVD unless you plug in usb speakers or head phones. Advance Driver downloads tried really hard to find a driver but no luck. Thanks for your comments Bob.

Are you current on all Windows Updates? The reason I'm asking is because it found compatible sound drivers for both of my machines and they are much older than yours (circa 2004-2005). So, after I did the initial install, I had no sound, my graphics driver was standard vga (expected) and I needed a printer driver but after I downloaded all updates everything worked!

Thanks Norepli, I am up to date. I have had a lot of issues, now solved with help from this forum. Last remaining issue is sound. I was wondering whether you can buy a usb video card and if this would work. BobP

I still think you can fix your sound problem. I originally fixed one of my Windows 8 sound problems by using an XP sound driver. Can you download the original drivers (or do you have them)?

Thanks Norepli, I do , and it was XP I upgraded from. Advanced Driver updates tried to use/upgrade this driver, spent over 2 hours, connected by team viewer, and could not fix this problem. Fixed everything else. My notebook is a generic brand and I did download speccy which shows all the details on my machine of the hardware, but no luck. I would love to have it fixed so the sound just comes from the notebook, but everything else works so I feel I can't complain too much for an older generic brand notebook. BobP

How is the driver packaged? Is it an executable? If so, just try to click the executable and see what happens. If you get a compatibility warning, try running the executable in the compatibility mode. If that doesn't work, we need to find out where the driver was placed on your PC (even though the installation failed). For example, in my case, the PC was a Dell and the driver was extracted to an R19847 folder (or something like that). Anyway, once I knew where the driver resided, I simply went into the device manage and updated the sound device by pointing it to the R19847 folder. So it was really updated by a manual install.

Thanks Norepli. The notebook is at home, I will have a look where this driver is and see what I can tell you. I may be a couple of days before I get back to you. Being that you are talking to someone who is not a tech person, can you give me any more tips on what to look for. I can locate the driver through control panel/system. Thanks for all your help. One other thing you can prepare to do is share those speccy results relative to the sound hardware and if it couldn't identify the hardware, then try downloading HWInfo32 portable here: HWiNFO32 Download
Just unzip it, run it and print a custom sound device report.
