HI all,
First of all, my apologies because this thread is abit out of topic....

I got a Kingston USB thumbdrive 16.0GB to be used as part of a recovery media for Windows 8. However, now "My Computer" is showing 14.0GB available out of what is supposed to be a 16.0GB. Mind you, this is a new USB thumbdrive with no pre-loaded softwares.

WHat happen to the rest of the 2.0GB?

Damn M$ for asking us to get a USB 16.0GB thumbdrive to create recovery image....

It rattles my mind to think that my Lenovo Y580 comes with a DVD-Rom...and why we cannot create a recovery disk using the DVD rom??? My GOD!!!

When they ask you for 16GB stick you provide what you have.

Actually is the manufacturers fault because they use the decimal system when making HDDs and USB sticks:
16000000000B = 16000000KB = 16000MB = 16GB
And really the computer uses the binary system (displayed in decimal form like: divide with 1024 instead of 1000) to show the space:
16000000000B = 15625000KB = 15258.7MB = 14.9GB

That's why the 1000MB = 1GB is always noted on almost all HDD labels: To tell you you lose space, actually because 1024MB = 1GB.

So in the end, your lets say 14.9GB stick (just as mine) will do fine for backup.

Hi all;
Thanks alot for the feedback.

Another question. Need to ask how to hid all the partitions in the factory installed HDD for Lenovo Y580.

This is the scenario.
Firstly, i successfully migrated all of the following partitions:
OEM/Hidden partition,
C partition: boot drive/ program files and data drive &
D partition: containing drivers

from my Lenovo factory installed HDD to the SSD and to use the SSD as the primary boot drive :thumb:. (I am using a caddy tray for this whereby i plan to swap out the optical drive and pluck in the Lenovo factory installed HDD). Now, i plan to use the factory installed HDD as my data drive. However, for "safety reasons" :D i do not plan to re-format the entire factory installed HDD but rather to keep those partitions just in case if my SSD fails.

Hence, how do i turn all the three partitions above (in the Lenovo factory installed HDD) to become dormant? I want the computer to boot up from the existing SSD but then to treat the factory installed HDD as the data drive and not to read from any of the three partitions in the factory installed HDD.

ANy ideas on how to accomplish this? By the way, i am planning to use EASUS as my disk partition freeware.

The "hiding" will be difficult in some cases.

For example: on my HP laptop, I want the recovery partition to be invisible as well.

Simple: just remove drive letter in Disk Management BUT it won't let me do that.

Some partitions, mostly self-made, have this option unlike the pre-installed ones which have the option grayed out.

If that's the case there as well then we both need an idea on this one. :eek:

You will need to delete all partitions, or you will have boot up problems.

Hi Ray,

The OP will probably try it. But I cannot do it because it's the only disk used and has recovery on it + main OS.
This is just my own config but someone else with more disks will probably attempt this without issues.

I've already managed a successful refresh with the recovery partition (still no DVD's made yet).
In my case I just wanted to hide the drive letter. Seems not to be easy to achieve just as expected.

Thanks anyway.

Hi all;

Need your help on how to fix the Lenovo One Key Recovery (OKR) 8.0. My Y580 comes pre-installed with Windows 8 and have the OKR8.0. The Lenovo OKR8.0 is functioning well until last night after i clone the HDD into the SSD.

The stock Lenovo HDD has 3 partitions:
C: Windows8_OS
D: Lenovo Drivers
Hidden partition: OEM partition

Last night, i clone the stock Lenovo HDD into my SSD (using Paragon software) and weird things start to happen. The hidden partition in the stock HDD becomes visible with a letter attached to it. This has never happen before when i clone it earlier in the day (as part of a trial run). Also, the Lenovo's OKR becomes unusable in the stock HDD after the cloning was done. The function of the Paragon software is to clone the stock HDD into the SSD and not to mess around with the stock HDD~!!! Like attaching an alphabet to the OEM hidden partition and breaking the OKR8.0 in the stock Lenovo HDD.

Then, the Lenovo's OKR in the SSD becomes unusable. This is expected because Paragon has shrinked all the partitions when cloning the data from a 500GB HDD to a 120GB SSD.

My questions:
(1): How to hide the OEM partition in the stock Lenovo HDD?
(2): How to fix the broken Lenovo OKR8.0 in the stock Lenovo HDD?
(3): How to fix the broken Lenovo OKR8.0 in the SSD?

Please help....
