Unable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver

Hey guys,
I'm having problems with the Synpatics Touchpad driver. When I install it, it works great (except for the left-edge-swipe but that's a known problem) but after some time using it, I will eventually get this error. Every single time I installed this driver, I get the error a few days later. When I choose to uninstall it and reboot, my touchpad and keyboard don't work so it uninstalled the whole driver and didn't even use generic Windows 8 touchpad drivers. Then I have to plug in an external mouse for me to be able to reinstall the driver from my desktop. Then I reboot and everything works again but eventually I will get the error again. Now I got the error again and I'm sick of it! Is there a way to fix it? I downloaded the driver from here Drivers | Synaptics and I choose the first one for Windows 8. I know that using HP drivers for my laptop (HP Pavilion DV7-1130eg) could be a better option but they are from 2009 or so, and they don't have the edge swipe gestures for Windows 8 (that lower the pain of the UI-formely-known-as-metro lol). I tryed to let Windows "update" the driver from the device manager (although I knew I was using the latest one) and it downgraded it to a 2011 driver. If I didn't want it, uninstalled and installed the newest one, it was the new one the first time I open it, and the second time I opened it, it reverted back to the 2011 driver (I had BSoD problems in that time that were caused be someting else, so I reinstalled whole Windows 8 anyway and decided to never update using device manager again). Is there a way to fix this so I don't get the error?
Thanks (Screenshot if error is attached)

I originally used a Vista driver that came with my HP laptop circa 2006-2007; never a problem. Now without problem I am using the one in the snip below.

I think that's the one Device Manager on Windows 8 downgraded to, but I'm not sure. I just want the latest one for the edge gestures.

I'll make another post after this one - I found 2 memory dumps, so I ran the memory dump scripts to see what happened and posted it here....

Your BIOS dates from 2010. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

Memory dumps blame aswnet.sys - a component of your Avast. Hotfix info here: https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=1454

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

hpdskflt causing errors - it's one of the drivers that needed updating in the BSOD post prior to this:

HP Mobile Data Protection System Disk Filter

Other than that, there are no errors (that I can see) related to the Synaptic error.
Could you please reproduce the error, note the time that it happens, and then generate a new set of reports?
Using that info we may be able to find the driver problems more easily.

hpdskflt causing errors - it's one of the drivers that needed updating in the BSOD post prior to this:
hpdskflt.sys Fri May 13 14:47:02 2011 (4DCD7CA6)
HP Mobile Data Protection System Disk Filter
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=hpdskflt.sys

Other than that, there are no errors (that I can see) related to the Synaptic error.
Could you please reproduce the error, note the time that it happens, and then generate a new set of reports?
Using that info we may be able to find the driver problems more easily.

Thanks but that's a lot of info. I see that Windows 8 is reporting to me that my memory card driver is missing, so I downloaded the one that Action Center (or whatever it's called in english) recommended.

For updating the BIOS, do you mean this HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) HP Pavilion dv7-1130eg Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support ? It's still only from 2011 so it's not very new and it's also only for Windows 7 64-bit. And do you say that updating the BIOS is dangerous (or is flashing it something else)?

I knew about the problems with Avast (aswnet.sys) so I uninstalled it and kept using the built-in Windows Defender based on MSE.

I don't know how to work with the Carrona website to find the driver, I just try to find drivers for my laptop here Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv7-1130eg Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support but they're all old (around 2008-2011) and the latest version of Windows they are compatible with is Windows 7 64-bit (I have Windows 8 Pro 64-bit).

For the HP Mobile Data Protection System Disk Filter and Accelerometer drivers, I could only find the HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection here HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection HP Pavilion dv7-1130eg Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support but I don't know if it's the same thing or even if it's a driver or only some software, and I didn't install any HP software on my clean install of Windows 8 so I guess I couldn't be the one that installed then so I can't uninstall any programs that use them (or I maybe be completely wrong, I'm no expert).

For the Realtek PCI/PCIe Adapters I found this Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC HP Pavilion dv7-1130eg Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support but it's again from 2008.

Then there is something that looks like an IR device on the front of my laptop next to the audio jacks. I'm not sure but it could be this ENE CIR Receiver Driver HP Pavilion dv7-1130eg Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support .

There were som Disk Errors in my older installs of Windows 8 (because I had so many problems and couldn't even boot sometimes, I had to reinstall Windows 8 about 3x) but my latest install didn't report any. I'm gonna do the Diagnostic Procedure anyway. I don't know what's hybrid boot/sleep.

Real thanks for your help and sorry for me listing everything I found and what seemed like the right driver to me, but I just wanna be sure that I'm installing the right thing and don't make my PC unbootable again since all of the drivers from the HP website are only for Windows 7 and are old.

EDIT: The Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure seems long and complicated to me, so I'm gonna do it after all other problems are solved if it's possible.

The hard drive problems that I saw were from 09 January and there were 49 events!
I would strongly suggest running the hard drive diagnostics as soon as possible

The BIOS update may be needed, but let's hold off on doing that for now.

The hpdskflt.sys driver should be updated if the system will let you. Run the installer in Compatibility mode for Win7. If it won't let you, just post back to let us know.

For the Realtek device, try this one: Realtek Download the Win8 Auto Installation Program (SID:1546352)

Don't forget to fix the Avast problems. I'd suggest just removing it, then enable Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall through the Action Center.

Let's fix these things and then see what happens.

Good luck!

hpdskflt.sys - But from where do I get the update?? Is it the one I found on the HP website?

I strongly suspect a hard drive problem due to the 49 errors on 09 January

The hpdskflt.sys is from HP, but it's a "cranky" driver IME (In My Experience). Be sure to set a System Restore point before trying it, and be sure to uninstall the older version before installing the newer version.

Also, try the system without the hpdskflt.sys driver - I haven't had anyone try that yet, but it's possible that it's not required and may help the system (although it'll leave you without "drop" protection).

If you can't find a Win8 version, scan the HP website for newer systems that have the same protection. Then see if their Win8 drivers will install on your system. Finally, if you can't find any Win8 versions, try running the installer in Compatibility mode for Win7 - that may help get it installed.

Then test to see if any of this has helped with the Synaptics problem.

Good luck!

Ok, I found this, but there's no info that it contains hpdskflt.sys but it's the most relevant thing HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection HP Pavilion dv7-1130eg Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support

That's the version made for my notebook, now I also found the same thing in a Windows 8 version HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection | HP® Support but I don't know if it's still the same thing because they also call it HP 3D Driveguard in brackets in the description.

Should I try the Windows 8 version? They don't say for which models it is, so I guess it's generic or something.

If it were me, I'd first make a System Restore point (and maybe a disk image) in case of problems.

Then I'd remove the program and see if the system still BSOD's

If it doesn't, then I'd try the Windows 8 version that you listed last ( HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection | HP® Support ). The hpdskflt.sys driver in that package is dated from 23 Aug 2012 (I used Universal Extractor (free) to extract the files from the HP download).

Good luck!

But I DON'T get BSODs. I did get them before because of Avast, but that was maybe two weeks before, I don't get any BSODs now. My only problem is that the Synaptics driver keeps failing.
And what should I uninstall? I don't have ANY HP software installed.

Wait, so I should backup BEFORE the procedure? I won't have where to backup if I'll plug my hard drive with backups into my PC when running the procedure.

EDIT: I was reading the instructions, and I wasn't absolutely sure which one to download. I have a Hitachi HTS543225L9A300 so is the test for me HGST Windows Drive Fitness Test (WinDFT) here Downloads ?

You should always backup BEFORE a problem occurs. For example, I never backed up my wedding photos - and one day my hard drive died. While I worried about the excruciating ways that my wife would use to kill me - I remembered that I'd forgotten to erase the pictures from the camera! Saved by sheer luck - and I lived to tell the story!

Backing up BEFORE the test is a good idea also - but don't do it because of the test, do it because it needs doing.
I specify it after failing the test because you may not have another opportunity before the drive dies on you - and data recovery after that gets very, very expensive!!!

I suggest this bootable test for Hitachi drives (I don't like running tests from within Windows as it adds another layer of complexity to the software/testing):

Well, since I have most of my important data still on the hardrive from my previous Vista installation I'm gonna skip the backup, mainly because I don't have any space left anywhere for it either. And...what is the chance of the test failing? And what would it do?
