No sound after installing audio drivers

Hi all, I've tried searching both this thread and elsewhere but I can't find a solution that works for my issue.
I just upgraded my Sager NP6165 laptop to W8 and updated all the drivers (chipset, wireless, etc.) using the Sager websites latest drivers and everything went well except for the fact that I have no sound at all.

I have two listings in the Device Manager for sound; High Definition Audio Device and VIA High Definition Audio.
The VIA HD Audio is listed as working properly in the Properties section but the other has a yellow exclamation mark this message: Location 3 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus) "This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Operation Failed} The requested operation was unsuccessful."
In order to solve this problem I have tried updating the audio drivers several times, trying to look internally and on the Web and have done multiple driver uninstalls for both hardware listings with no luck. I still have no sound although the software tells me that I should.
Does anyone have any ideas? Should I install an older driver in compatibility mode?

Uninstall the High Definition Audio Device, in the Device Manager. This is the generic, basic function, sound driver that Windows installs. If you have two they can conflict and nothing work. I assume your PC has Via High Definition Audio as the sound chip.

Check the Sound Panel and your "speakers" should be set as the Default Playback device.

The PC Vendor's drivers are preferred. Non vendor drivers may or may not work or may not work correctly.

Windows 7 drivers are compatible and work OK in Win 8. I have RealTek audio and I installed the Gigabyte (my motherboard) Windows 7 drivers and the sound works perfectly.

Many thanks for your help. I've tried uninstalling those devices in Device Manager and W8 keeps reinstalling them. The speakers are the default device. I just tried refreshing W8 and got the system sounds back momentarily but now they're gone and no audio from the speakers either. I haven't re-installed the vendors audio drivers yet....

Sager is supposed to have excellent technical support so you may have to call them if you can't get the audio working... My coworker just bought a very high end Sager notebook and he's very happy with the hardware and the tech support...
