Just built a PC for my neighbor... He is on a tight budget and I built a PC based on the Intel 860 CPU, Gigabyte B75 mb, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 2 DVD RW drives, and 500GB 7200rpm Hitachi hard drive. We used the onboard video and audio until his budget permits the purchase of the ATI HD 770 Sapphire video card and a 128GB SSD and perhaps 16GB more RAM (it's cheap at $50 for an 8GB stick). We used an old HP Presario full tower case that must weigh 80lbs and a new 650 watt CoolerMaster power supply.

I loaded Win7 on it as he owned the s/w and he'll move to Win8 sometime this year. This PC replaces an 8 year-old PC that I also built for him. He uses the system for web browsing, DVD watching and music, nothing very demanding. This was my 1st Gigabyte motherboard in 7 years or so and I was very impressed! Easy to setup, fast and rock solid!

The board looks tiny in this behemoth case, but he really likes it. I like the HP shrouds over the CPU that uses a 120mm fan at the rear to pull the heated air off the CPU. This PC is no speed demon but it replaces a P4 based system with 2.5GB of RAM, running WinXP SP3, so he's very happy with it and so am I!

with only 1 stick of ram you lose double channel, I will have get 2 x 2 gb it's only $ 18 , or 2 x 4 Gb $ 32, you don't need 16 gb with this kind of CPU . and with the money left. I will have get a i3-2100 it's only $ 20 more.

What model of cooler master PSU is this, I don't recognize it. With a HD 7770 a 500 watts of even better quality will have work .

The local store where I bought everything didn't have the i3 available and they didn't have any more 8GB RAM in stock until later this week so my neighbor will buy 8GB more for $50. I don't remember the model CoolerMaster PS this was but it did the job for $60. The video card will wait as he's not a gamer and he'll probably want the $80 HD 7750. We were operating with a $400 budget and I got everything for $394, including tax, which made him very happy. He can easily upgrade the CPU, RAM, video and hard drives as his $ permits...

I wouldn't have a problem putting one 8 gig stick in if I new I was going to buy another in the not to distant future. 16 gig may sound like overkill but RAM is cheap so why not. Some of those old cases are nice and solid. It should be nice and quiet too. I've had a few on the cheap side cases that had rattles and other vibration noises as a result of being on the flimsy side. I can relate to doing things on a budget too. All my builds are budget builds that I upgrade and or add on to over time.

Yep, the "budget" cases that I have to use to meet the $ are the cheap ones that are flimsy and guaranteed to cut your fingers. I try to reuse old cases whenever I can. This case was from an HP Pavilion from 2000 that looked like it had never been used. I put a few nice Thermaltake fans in it and we're all set. Nice and quiet, too!

You got the "cut fingers" part right. Is that a beige case? You don't see to many of those these days. Everything is black or sometimes red.

Yes, it's the "stylish beige" that isn't even faded, which makes me think it sat in a closet for a long time. It's in perfect condition, so I didn't want to throw it out.

:thumb: The last DVD ROM drive I bought has interchangeable beige, white and black faceplates. Mind you that was many years ago when black was just becoming the new beige. Nothing wrong with recycling old computer stuff. Especially if it makes the buyer happy. ;)
The last couple of "made from spare parts" PC's I gave to family and friends were beige cases with matching optical drives. :)

Thanks, guys! The HP case was just too nice to throw away and my neighbor likes the height of it because he keeps it under his desk and he doesn't need to reach down to access the DVD drives. He is physically challenged, so I tried to accomodate his requirements. The new board looks tiny in that behemoth case, but there is plenty of room for airflow and the clear shroud over the CPU works very well. Some of the older cases have proprietary connections from the front panel to the pins on the motherboard, but this case was easy to figure out.

Some of these old full height cases are great for building servers, especially home servers with lots of hard drives. I put in a front fan to pull in air and several exhaust fans in the rear to push hot air out. If the person I'm building the system for has pets, I put a Scotch pad behind the plastic front panel bezel, directly in front of the fan to catch the dirt and dust. The pad can be removed and cleaned regularly and it works to keep most dust and pet hair from getting in the case. Cigarette smoke is another matter entirely and those systems get so much gummy residue on them that they are usually not able to be cleaned and put back into service.

Nice idea about the scotch pad. I will have to keep that in mind. Yeah, cigarette smoke is bad news for electronics. One of the guys I work with smokes and he gummed up a $15,000 piece of electronic equipment so badly that it needed to totally rebuilt. My boss was not very happy! :D

I've gotten a few PC's gummed up with cigarette smoke residue. A little gasoline and a match cleans it up quit nicely. ;)

Yeah, some are so bad, I won't even bring them into the house. I clean the really dirty ones in the garage. It's a wonder these things can even run they are so caked with dust and debris.

My PC

Here's the PC I built for myself. It's my main PC and is nothing fancy but it's rock solid reliable and I'm using it right now... It's quiet, cool and runs Win7 and Win8 nice and snappy. I'll get a better video card, I gave my Radeon 7750 to our son last month and this one is good for Windows, I'm not a gamer...

Nice :thumb: Nice and clean looking, I like that.
Mine's not worth posting pictures of. Don't get me wrong, it does what I need it to do, but it's pretty run of the mill looking. Next build maybe. ;)

The wiring looks great! I wish I could say the same about my PC. Maybe its time to see if I can tidy things up a bit. :D

Good on you! :thumb:

It's always fun to put a little micoATX board in a full size tower, really makes you think about technology and how back then, it was needed to have addon video or sound cards or Ethernet cards as the board didn't have it built in; even though they're like a massive sheet of PCB! I really like how back then, they knew how to build PC cases. These days, it's just a baby heatsink and baby fan and usually no case fan and that's that. Back in the day, they had CPU heatsink shrouds with the fan in the rear of the case, as to pull cool air in, through the CPU and out the back versus just spewing hot air everywhere.

Miss the days of hinged cases from Dell..... :(

Yes, I miss the old style cases. I'm cleaning up a case from an old (2000) HP Pavilion for my neighbor's wife. It had a 100w Bestec Mini power supply without a 4 pin 12v plug for the motherboard, so I ordered a replacement on eBay that is 300w and comes with the 4 pin plug. This will be a nice case for her PC.
