Big Mistake Buying a New Computer with Windows 8

Decided to buy a new computer to replace one loaded with Malware and having older computer cleaned and used as a backup to two other home/office computers. Not only is it a pain to learn a totally new operating system when needing to get documents done in a rush but none of my HP printers have drivers for Windows 8. So, now what. Buy new printers or maybe just dump the PCs for Macs - although I'm not a big fan of Apple, I am beginning to be less of a fan of Microsoft - Stop trying to make me use Bing. Maybe I can take the computer somewhere and have Windows 8 removed and 7 installed. At least then I will have a functional office. (Just venting)

You're not actually learning "a totally new operating system";instead, what you're faced with learning is a new desktop look and feel -- what used to be called the "Metro" interface.

If you look at the tiles on your Start Screen, there is one named desktop. If you click on that, you will see a desktop that very closely resembles what you had with Windows 7.

Also, if you want to have the Start button back, there are threads here that list out all the different apps available to do that -- many of which are free.

As to drivers, this happens with every new Windows OS -- manufactures either stop supporting their hardware under the new OS or they take a while to get out new drivers.

IF your printers have Win7 drivers, they should still work under Win8. I have HP and Epson printers, and the Win7 drivers work just fine under Win8.

Mark is correct. Be patient and don't give up on Win8 yet!

if you throw win 8 , you will throw any other OS. Stay with it, ask for help, learn how to learn.
My Canon work with win 8 drivers off the bat, I still installed win7 drivers to get some functions, and all ok. We are here to help.:thumb:

Windows 8 is great. You just have to learn the new ways windows 8 operates. I'm just about mastering everything windows 8 has to offer. Yes there could be some hiccups, but what you could do on Windows 7, you can still do in Windows 8. As for the HP drivers, I just let it automatically detect my printer on the HP website, hit install and bobs your uncle, my printer works flawlessly.

As for you saying you would go to Mac, I just have some things to say. You could go "that way" you will just set yourself with more headaches and you have to learn something completely new and foreign to you. Since you have the newest windows 8, play around with it. If you have any issues, just post something here and someone will be nice enough to help.

A pretty large number of Win8 users don't like the Metro interface and avoid it for the most part. See the "more popular" threads in the "General Discussion" forum. If you like earlier versions of Windows better, then you can focus on using the Win7-type desktop available from the Metro start screen. The worst feature of Win8 for many is the lack of the Win7-type start menu. There are several options for making Win8 behave much more like, say Win7, from the desktop: two examples are Stardock Start 8 and Classic Shell. Personally, I do almost nothing available through the Metro interface, and I don't think I am missing a thing a care about in Windows. To me, the Metro interface puts inefficiencies between me and my work/play.

There are vastly more similarities/parallels in regard to how things are done between, say, Lion or Mt. Lion and Win7 than there are between the Metro interface and Win7.

true but hp don't offer support on all of their printers up to the latest versions of mac os so it's no different to windows.

HP suck at driver updates.

Hello!

First off, take a deep breath. :)

Windows 8 is new and different and functions differently than Windows' past. To try to help better, let's make a list of things you need quicker access to, say Documents.

By default, the Start Screen doesn't have the Documents library on it, odd I know. To quickly resolve this, go to the Desktop, open up File Explorer, it's the little file folder thing on the Taskbar. Then right click on the Documents library, and hit Pin to Start.

Then go to the Start Screen, scroll over to the end, and you will see the new Documents tile there. You can now drag that to where ever you want it to be.
