Yesterday upgraded to W8 Pro. Messed up everything. Sony/Vaio/VGN-FW140E. CD-DVD did NOT show up and when I update driver software (device manager) it says: The best driver software is being installed in your device. It is an Optiarc DVD RW AD 7560 USB device. Any idea how can I get this fixed?

Try uninstalling the driver in Device manager, reboot and let windows find the driver. BTW, welcome to the forums.

Thanks brummyfan. Do you think it will work? Besides I am afraid as I am not sure Windows will be able to find and install the driver. Will it be safe and go ahead and uninstall it?

At the moment, most of the problems are due to third party security and the drivers, so no harm in trying the drivers.

Since you're going to install Win8 all over again, it is possible that you can boot off that dvd even though your pc doesn't recognise the drive.

Have you tried this?

No aiko. The problem is that I don't have W8 in discs as I bought it on line. What I am considering right now is of going back to Vista with the only problem. Will I be able to get back all and the PC the way it was before insalation of W8? I did a very big mistake of not reding reviews. Please advice me.

You could install windows vista, but if there is one OS I would not recommend it's vista. I'm assuming Brummyfan's solution didn't work?

I had this issue once.. It was fixed by editing the registry.. One sec..

EDIT:
Found it!

  1. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
  2. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
  3. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
  4. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
  6. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

2nd EDIT:
There seems to be an automated fixit available:
Hardware devices are not working or are not detected in Windows

Can you tell us if this fixed it?

Brammyfan. I tried what you suggested but at no avail. It did not brink the CD drive back. I also enabled it at BIOS set up (it was disabed) but that did not work either. Other idea? What if I decide to go back to Vista since I have the system recovery discs? I don't have the drivers disc though.

Burn yourself a windows 8 disc as theog said before going back to Vista and keep the key safe as you have already paid and can be used in future.

Now I have decided to run system recovery form two discs of VAIO recovery. I am trying to boot the machine but it won't. It would send my to W8. I guess there might be something with BIOS. My laptop is VAIO VGN-FW140E. Since the CD is not present I was trying to boot from external CD drive as primary (I assigned that at BIOS set up) but at no avail. It does NOT boot at all. PLEASE HELP.
