My Epson Stylus Photo R800 now prints only a basic text mode, and doesn't show the complete preference options - e.g., draft, text, photo, best photo etc.... Epson says, that in Windows 8, it's up to Microsoft to fix this, and there is no Epson driver for this model in Windows 8. The printer worked fine in Windows 7. Any ideas?:(

Great news !
The people from Epson who responded clearly didn't even bother to investigate.

Kind regards.

I don't know how many are using 32bit Windows 8, which is what they have drivers for.
But for 64bit Windows 8, which I believe the majority are using, they do not have any drivers available!

And the one that comes with W8/64 is a sad joke.
The only settings available are to switch between A4/Letter and Portrait/Landscape.

I tried to look at it again, but when I click it it just opens the same info as when looking at Win8/64 drivers :
Description: Windows 8 drivers for this product are installed automatically when you power-on and connect your printer to your Windows 8 computer.

No downloads for 32bit neither?
I can't see what you actually downloaded?

I tried installing the w7/64 drivers, but they didn't work.

I clicked on Printer Driver in the centre of that page, and followed the instructions for the manual download/installation (since it obviously hadn't installed automatically). I know it says 32-bit, but it still worked fine for me

I don't get any 'manual download' instructions - only 'manually install drivers'.
I found no download links at all?

My R800 is working too, with the W8/64 drivers 'Epson ESC/P Standard 7 V4 Class Driver' .
It's just working very badly, compared to in XP.

Was it 'Epson Easy Photo Print v2.32.00' you downloaded? That's the only download link I found on that page.
What exactly is the name of the fil eyou downloaded there?

sorry Bjornkn - I meant manually install driver - and when I clicked on that, it all started (forgive me - I am not very computer literate)
I now the frustration you must be feeling - that was how I was, too!

Sorry if I sounded harsh...
I still don't know what actually started when you clicked there though.
Here I just get a lot of instructions on how to add a printer manually with the standard W8 drivers.
Do you now have real Epson R800 drivers working, where you can set print quality, lots of paper sizes (including CD/DVD printing?), color profiles etc?
All running under W8/64?
I can't understand how you managed to make that happen.
Maybe they had drivers earlier, and then just removed them?

I have exactly the same problems in trying to download the drivers for the R800. I follow the instructions to adding the printer manually at which point the epson instructions stop. So I click on the add printer manually, select a port and then run windows update to load up the name of various printers but the R800 still doesn't exist in the list of printers under epson! It has various other epson stylus photo models but not the R800. Can anyone please help?

The way I solved it finally was to install the W7/64 drivers, twice actually, as after the first time they appeared to not have been installed. The W8 (generic Epson) drivers were installed automatically (or manually) with W8, but after installing the W7 drivers they appeared quite hidden, because there apparently was still only one R800 installed. But by right clicking the R800 icon I could select the 'new' R800 (2) Epson drivers, and set that as the default printer. And they work :)

I have a different Epson printer (Artisan 730) but the Epson instructions are to first REMOVE the drivers that Win8 installed. Then, you manually install the drives from the Epson site. I had to do that before the Epson worked properly. And, these are Win7 drivers (the ones I'm using) since Win8 drivers aren't available yet.

Excellent everyone I shall give that a go
