Solved Help with Canon ip4500 printer, officially unsupported

While they released Windows 8 drivers for many of their printers, I've been told from Canon that they will not support this one. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than myself, could somehow help me try to "grab" the driver from a Windows 7 installation? On 7, the installation procedure for full driver support is this: let Windows install its own driver, and then install the "Printer Driver Add-On Module Ver.2.00" which you can download (and extract) here. Both x86/x64 versions available, and of course I have a Win7 PC which I can use.

I manually tried to update the driver and point to the extracted folders of the add-on module but it doesn't work, because Windows 8 looks for the printer but can't find it, since Win 8 will not even support and install basic functionality.

Thanks a lot... it's just a pity to throw away a printer like that.

update: Well, I've received a follow-up from Canon and they will release a driver at some point. Good news.

That's good news! Pretty sure I read somewhere that some users have successfully installed the Vista printer driver package under Win 8 and got it up and running. if that's the case, then the Win 7 drivers should also work.

Regards.

The 7 drivers do not work, because they require Windows to first recognize the printer and install a basic driver, and that doesn't happen. However, I now see that Canon provides a full driver package for Vista (instead of an "add-on" driver as is the case with 7) and that might work on 8. I'll skip that though, since they promised to release Win 8 drivers. :)

edit: sorry, I now realized you mentioned just that: Vista drivers working on 8. Good to know for Windows 9!

Vista driver download confirmed working perfectly - it's strange there's no official Windows 8 download yet.

Odd indeed but may come with time.
Great to hear you are up and running!

I had this problem with my Lexmark, trying over and over to install and reinstall etc. Then I read the instructions from MS to goto "Devices and Printers" and add a printer . A download happened the printer was recognized for both USB and Wireless.

I got this to work as well using the Vista drivers, but it required one additional step. After installing the Vista Drivers, it still didn't work, so I downloaded the "Canon My Printer" application that is on the same page as the Vista Drivers. Once I installed that, there is a "Diagnose and Repair Printer" option that I clicked on that "repaired" my installation. That finally got everything working, although I have been at it for a couple of hours, so it might have been something else. I also found no Windows Updates were not getting applied properly, so I fixed that and applied a ton of updates, so maybe that is a factor as well. Good luck to all the Canon owners out there.
