I have good news for laptop users with built in ALPS Touchpads. Acer/Gateway (same company) have been generous to create a new driver for Windows 8 32/64-bit users.

To make sure that your ALPS Touchpad may be compatible with this new driver for Windows 8, make sure that before upgrading to Windows 8, in Windows 7 open Device Manager, check the "Mice and other pointing devices" category and your Touchpad should be listed as "ALPS Pointing-device".

If it is, then you are a candidate to install the newly released drivers. Click the link for a direct download from Gateway.

:info:The link below is for driver verison 8.100.2020.112 (Windows 8 32/64-bit)

:note:Instructions:

1. Unzip the file.
2. Double-click on setup icon and install.
3. Reboot.

After installation, this new driver adds Windows 8 gestures that are found on Microsoft Surface and other tablets for the TouchPad. There are other features there, but those are up to you to experiment with.

:tip:You can access the TouchPad settings by either clicking the TouchPad icon in the taskbar or by going to Mouse Properties in Control Panel.

:warn: For users that have tried this driver and the swipe gestures do not work, it might be that your ALPS TouchPad uses a slightly different driver. Here are some alternative Windows 8 ALPS TouchPad drivers available.

I have not tested these, but users from other forums say these drivers have worked for them. Proceed with caution.

Clarification

Just upgraded my Dell laptop to Windows 8 and could not deactivate touchpad when using Bluetooth or USB mouse. I downloaded the ZIP file using the link above, unzipped it, and installed it. I works on my Dell Inspiron 1545. The ZIP file contains both 32 and 64 bit versions. Many thanks for guidance and explanation.

TouchPad on Dell Experion 1545 with Windows 8.1

I am now using Windows 8.1 on an Dell Inspiron 1545 and have found that the ALPS TouchPad driver that works best for me is this one from Dell:
Input_Driver_FGG85_WN_8.1200.101.214_A02.EXE and the newer 8.1200.101.218, A00 will not install.

I have the latest version 8.1200.101.218 on my Dell insporon 17R.
When I disable it from startup, my mouse cursor is fast and good, but when I run apoint.exe, it gets slower.
I set the mouse speed to the fastest both in DellTpad setting and in control panel.
I figured out that when I run apoint.exe, it edits the registry (CU-Control panel-mouse).
How can I set the DellTPad to the fastest with apoint running?

After one and a half year, I don't know what I did for fixing it.
I just know that I'm using Windows 10 now.

Ah, ok fair enough. Thanks anyway. Maybe it's about time I gave W10 a try.
