Hi folks. Another problem with my DVD drive here which I didn't have with Windows 7. As the title says my DVD drive will only read CDRs and not DVDs. My DVD drive is an Atapi iHAS122 . Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is?

Regards
Martin

Could be that the DVD laser itself has gone bad.

Thanks for the reply. It isn't that though as a few minutes before I installed Windows 8 from DVD. I had other DVD issues in the consumer preview and went back to Win 7 and all was ok again. Seems there's some bugs

just encountered that as well and I will look into it. I am just confirming it isnt an isolated incident or dvd reader gone bad. Stay tuned

I'm glad yours is working. I tried this last night and Command Prompt said it had 'completed successfully' so I rebooted but it didn't solve the problem. I'll try again tonight though.

I wonder what MS have done here? I thought the principle was that if things worked on Windows 7 they'd work on Windows 8 :/

Just for kicks, did you try other dvds you have laying around? my system have prob with one particular dvd rw that I know is brand new so there is some funkiness going on still.

try this fix from MS
DVD drive not recognized in windows 8 - Microsoft Community

Now it reads DVDs, it still acting a bit weird but I will keep checking, Oct 26 around the corner, hopefully manufacturer have some drivers ready ...

All of the optical drives I've used since Windows 95 used the Microsoft drivers.

I wonder whether Vivid did a clean install of Win8 or an upgrade from Win7. A buggered registry suggests the latter.

Well check this Bob, I have two lappies, two Asus different series and specs. Both got fresh win 8 install and both showed the same symptoms which is weird dvd readings. Both can read DVDs now, however it is not all fluid as it should. I am confident this will be resolved .

It's working now :). I plugged the SATA lead into a different slot, restarted and that didn't work, but then I put it in the original slot and it's ok - strange but I'm happy. I've had DVD drive problems both times I've installed Windows 8 to this PC - both clean installs too

Weird.

I've only installed Win8 on a single desktop machine. Nothing like that happened. (Touch wood. Fingers crossed. Etc.)
