Log on screen - bypass having to press the picture

I had this sorted in Win8 RP, and I forgot how I did it. It would load from a cold boot, bypass the log-on screen having to press the picture, and within 1-2 seconds would kill the start screen and literally dump me into the desktop area.

Can anyone please help?

I belive the option in ClassicShell was what worked last time in RP, but this doesn't seem to be working currently on the RTM. I just sit on the Start Screen instead.

for me, the way i was to get it to boot directly was to disable the global login to my live account. If you set it up where you log into each of your metro apps individually the prompt is removed. I believe this is a security feature based on the fact that using the global login without any sort of security check would open the system up to allowing others to do in app purchases using your linked credit card info. So its basically do one big login at the start up and not be bothered again, or login into each app individually.

You might check to see if the method in the tutorial to have your user account to be logged in on automatically at startup may be what you did.

I don't recall doing anything like that tutorial. I believe on the CP I edited some value like ''userlogon=1'', but I think for the RP I just used ClassicShell's option, which no longer seems to work on my laptop for the RTM release. I have heard that MS ripped out even more legacy code in-between RP and RTM.

Yeah, they disabled a lot of methods to be able to bypass Start and boot directly to the desktop. You might see if this along with what I posted above may get you a bit closer for now.

Classic Shell only skips the start screen AFTER you log in. It will not skip the login screen for you. For that you have to disable the "user must enter a user name to use this computer" or something like that. How to get to that seting currently escapes me.

I have set ClassicShell to skip the metro screen and then restarted the PC, but the PC did not bypass the Metro screen?

Either I am not understanding or..... Changing a new password for login to leaving it blank, bypasses picture/login and straight to metro. Or am I missing something?

That's part of it, but the OP also wants to boot directly to the desktop instead of to the default "Start" screen.

Yep, what I posted above will let you be able to log on (sign in) automatically to Windows 8.

Afterwards, you could use Classic Shell to set it to boot directly to the desktop.

Yes but that's not the point of win8, it needs to compete with android and apple, and I think though the visual design of the metro page is to chunky could prove a winner or at least 2nd place to apple.

Wow, it is the same steps as the tutorial you posted earlier in the thread. I must have been on autopilot when I originally said it didn't look familliar. Yes, I have set CS to skip the metro page on startup. On RP his would dump me from the Metro screen with 1-2 seconds, whereas in the RTM I simply remain at the Metro screen until I press enter to enter the Desktop (as it's the first tile).

Would anyone be able to troubleshoot this issue on their RTM installations? Is it just me having the issue?

I am installing RTM tonight and will check. But some people have reported that Classic Shell still works for them with RTM.

Another thing you can try is Start8. It uses a somewhat different system for bypassing the Metro screen, and it may work better (or worse) with the RTM.

Thank you Ivo for looking into it. I have heard the same for both, so it may just be something on those specific systems.

Have been looking into this and have found an article on this matter....

"The final build of Windows 8 has already leaked to torrent sites, which is giving the propellerheads a chance to dig through the code. One revelation will probably not sit well with enterprise customers: you can't bypass the don't-call-it-Metro UI. Normally, you have to boot Windows 8 and when the tiled desktop UI (formerly known as Metro) came up, you had to click on one of the boxes to launch Explorer. Prior builds of Windows 8 allowed the user to create a shortcut so you bypass Metro and go straight to the Explorer desktop. Rafael Rivera, co-author of the forthcoming Windows 8 Secrets, confirmed to Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet that Microsoft does indeed block the boot bypass routine from prior builds. He also believes that Microsoft has blocked the ability for administrators to use Group Policy to allow users to bypass the tiled startup screen. There had been hope that Microsoft would at least relent and let corporate users have a bypass, if only for compatibility's sake."

Though there is a quick fix for win8 developer build, find file: Shsxs.dll and rename it to Shsxs_backup.dll and reboot.
Other versions do have this dll file with slight diffs.

Classic shell works just fine.

You do get the start screen for a couple of secs, then the desktop.

Most importantly - it gives you a steering wheel - sadly lacking in win8.

I now bypass the start screen totally - it involves putting win7 explorer back in - it also gives the win7 start menu with fully working start search box ( and transparency ), no need for that screen at all.
