How do I uninstall UxStyle safely?

I'm on Windows 8, and I have UxStyle Core Beta 0.2.2.0, which I want to uninstall. I initially switched away from my custom theme (but didn't delete it, not quite sure how since I initially installed this years ago), and restarted. Next, I ran the UxStyle uninstaller in programs and features. Upon rebooting from that, I got the "black screen" error, where my monitors just constantly flicker on and off after the Windows logo displays. It doesn't actually get to the login screen after that.

I had to use a system restore to get my computer operational again, as the troubleshooting services failed to initialize. The system restores also told me they failed(error 0x800700b7), so I kept trying to restore to different points. Eventually, when I restarted, despite being told that the restore failed, the computer booted up properly. Not sure what happened there. Either way, this means that the program is back on my computer, and I want to get it off. What do I do?

You need to run SFC and DISM after uninstalling. UXStyles and other theme patchers make some major changes that need to be cleaned up on Wi8.1. I know because I usually patch. Just follow the guide I prepared(from different sources such as TechNet) below.

You can try fixing the files by copy & pasting in an Admin
Command Prompt:

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup&sfc/scannow&Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth&sfc/scannow&pause

And let it run through then
reboot and run it again to check if it cleaned everything.
It
may take a while depending on your hardware(HDD or SSD), and it may
appear to freeze at 20% on the third part, just be patient and
let in run out.

: only 2 false positives will show up(this is the result of the GWX software as Windows has nothing from the original OS software to compare it to´) and they are(in red):

This update enables the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows 8.1,
Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), and Windows
Server 2008 R2 SP1. This tracking service collects data about
functional issues in Windows.

This update contains the following two manifests that are occasionally
updated by the Diagnostic Tracking Service:
  • telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json
  • utc.app.json
The two files are marked as static files in the update. When an advanced
user runs the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the files are
unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There is no impact or
corruption on a device that is running this update, and this issue
will be fixed in a later service update.

I'm running Windows 8, not 8.1, will that still work? I've been reluctant to upgrade to 8.1 in case the custom themes mess up the installation. Also, do I have to do anything with my existing custom theme (which requires UxTheme to function) before running that? Like do I want to select a default theme and figure out how to delete it?

I switched to the default theme, and I deleted the files for the custom theme I was using. I rebooted, ran the UxStyle uninstaller, then ran the DSIM command, and once that completed, I ran sfc /scannow. Rebooted, and still got the black screen issue. Anything else I can try?

Did the theme pack have any programs that required registry setting to be applied to start at boot? I mean like OldNewExplorer or Transparency or AERO? They usually come with a click to apply and one to revert.

I believe this was the theme I used, and it's just something you drop into the themes folder Windows 8 Default Style by MrGRiM01 on DeviantArt

I'm also running Classic Shell 4.0.2, and Windows 8 Start Screen Customizer 1.3.8. Wouldn't be surprised if one of those could have been causing issues. They were both exe installers so I'm not sure exactly what they change.

Black Screen Bug!!

Please remove old theme from Aero folder and delete the .theme file and add the new pack directly to the theme folder

Always Create a System Restore Point before making any Changes to Your PC.
States here.

Have you deleted the files from C:\Windows\Resources\Themes?
You will need to download and install UxStyle Core Beta for windows 8 to use this theme, just extract the theme and put the msstyles file in the aero folder "C:WindowsResourcesThemesaero" and the theme file in the theme folder "C:WindowsResourcesThemes"

Also the AERO Glass needs to be turned off and Uninstalled or gotten rid of.

I deleted the files in aero, but not in themes. I'll try it again, making sure to clear everything this time and get back to you on that.

As for AERO Glass, do you mean the start screen customizer?

Aero Glass for Windows 8 RC3 (by Big Muscle) [link]

I made a Aero Glass for windows 8 all in one installer for your convenience you can download here [link]

I am working on making proper themes for Windows 8 but waiting for some better tools to hack it up a bit more first.

I have managed to move the details pane back to the bottom though (where it should be) if anyone is interested I will show you how.

Tried deleting the file Themes\Default Style\Default Style.msstyles, and I get an error saying that it's open in winlogon.exe. I deleted all of the themes in the personalize window that referenced the theme file, and I also tried rebooting. Still getting the error.

Anyways, I deleted all the files I could that had "Default Style" in the name aside from that, and I deleted all the themes in "personalize" that referenced it. Rebooted, then disabled "run at startup" for start screen customizer (looks like it doesn't modify the registry). Next, I uninstalled classic shell followed by UxStyle, and I ran DISM again. Once that finished, I remembered that I also had Clover installed, which modifies explorer. Uninstalled that and ran DISM once more, just to be safe. Rebooted after that, still a black screen.

If there isn't anything else I can try, what's most likely going to happen if I try upgrading to Windows 8.1? If something breaks during that, would I be able to restore back to Win8, or would I have to do a full reinstall?

Looking back at the files, apparently I made a backup of Shell under themes\aero. It was 2012 when I did this, so I have no idea what that backup was for. Is there anywhere where I can just get a vanilla version of the themes folder and overwrite everything there with a clean version?

If you want to install Windows 8.1, I would back up my files to a external HDD, download any drivers from manufacturers site, and clean install 8.1 (see post#4) . With the install media, you could first try upgrading by using the setup.exe, The only draw back with upgrading would be if you use refresh or reinstall you will go back to 8 and not 8.1 update, so a clean install would be better. After you get Windows 8.1 install though you should really think of installing Macrium Reflect Free to create system images. That's what I do before I start theming.

I have gone through this time and time again, The UxTheme Patcher has never worked correctly and will almost always create havoc on your system when either installing Windows Updates or uninstalling it. I had tried everything to prevent it but nothing works, even the developers "uninstall instructions", the bottom line is it's just downright poor coding and development on the developers part.

I am sorry to say that the only way I have found to completely rid yourself of the UxTheme Patcher and all of it's remnants is to do either a refresh or reset.

In the future, should you decide to install third party themes again, do yourself a favor and Google UxThemeSignatureBypass, so far this is by far the best method I have found to run third party themes.

Actually the UxTheme Patcher was the exact reason why I have taken to using Rollback Rx. I'll never use the UxTheme Patcher ever again, it's just a sh!tty patcher with sh!tty coding.

If I get a black screen with a repair, will a system restore work, or is it not possible to do a restore after running a repair? What about for a refresh?

Edit: Also, from one of the guides on doing a repair install:
You must have at least 8.87 GB + what is currently being used of free space on the hard drive/partition that Windows 8 is installed on. You may need more if you have a larger installation.

My C: drive has 24 GB free of 223 GB - if I'm interpreting these instructions correctly, does this mean that I will need to clean up something like 100 GB of files?

Using the Windows 8 recovery disk(you made one right?) try automatic boot repair. If that doesn't work, try repairing the Windows Boot manager: LINK.
