I can't find where to change the desktop icon spacing (vertical and horizontal) in 8.1.
Is it no longer possible to do without using regedit?
Thanks.

Do you mean right click Desktop > choose View > untick align icons in grid, so you can place them where you wish?

No. I mean space between icons. It used to be (at least in Windows 7) somewhere in the personalize settings. You could change the number of pixels between icons and much more about the desktop. Now in Windows 8.1 I can't find it.

Sorry I can't help then. I never needed to do that, So I've never seen/noticed it before.

I know that in Windows 7, CTL-PNL --> Personalization --> Window Color and Appearance will do what you want. However, I do not have Win8 or 8.1, so I do not know if such exists in those versions.

You are correct. That's where it is in Windows 7 . but it's not there in Windows 8.1 so they must have moved it. I can't imagine that they removed it. What would they gain by removing an already available tool?

I guess they did remove it and I will need to do it through the registry. Darn. That's a shame.
Thanks for the link topgundcp.

One more point.

I made the registry changes, rebooted and discovered that nothing changed!

Then I stumbled upon a website that said one should next hold Ctrl and scroll up and down. That did it. I wonder if the Ctrl mouse scroll would have worked without the registry changes. Hmm.

I changed the registry value for Icon Spacing and it worked. I changed the value -1125 to -2250 then restarted my PC and the spacing was just right for me. :)

I've just tried and it did, without any registry edits. Scrolling the mouse-wheel while holding Ctrl - it resizes everything - increases/decreases the space between icons and the size of the icons too! :) So, it's quite an option without editing the registry. It would be nice if Windows informed users about it
