How to remove the Homegroup icon in Windows 8?

The Windows 7 method for removing the homegroup icon from the navigation pain doesn't seem to work, even though the extremely similar method for the libraries icon does. Has anyone managed to remove it? I don't feel like disabling homegroups, Microsoft made setting up a network too annoying without it (unless someone has a guide...)

Here was the old way. It seems to have no effect:

    Hello Pixel Eater,

I just tested the tutorial in Windows 8, and it works if you also do it with these registry locations below as well.

    32-bit and 64-bit Windows 8:
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}\ShellFolder
    Only 64-bit Windows 8:
    Code:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}\ShellFolder

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}\ShellFolder
    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

I think it copies the value and ownership permissions to those keys automatically, at least after restart. I've tried this word for word on two installs, a 32-bit and 64-bit and on both of them Homegroup just sticks around. It doesn't really make sense.

Well, back to the drawing board. I got it working once by doing what I posted above with 64-bit Windows 8 as the main OS on a laptop, but I can't repeat it on a 64-bit Windows 8 virtual machine.

    More work to do.

When I opened it, it was already under the impression homegroup was disabled. I'm sure because according to Windows 7 spec it was. I reenabled and redisabled to no avail. I'll keep playing with it, but I think 8's going to require its own solution. Strange that it works *sometimes*, although never for me.

    I have done it manually:_
Open Computer and right-click on "Homegroup" icon present in Navigation pane and select “Change Home Group Settings
Now click on "Leave the homegroup..." link given at bottom. (it will ask, and you need to confirm it)

Open Services.msc. Scroll down and disable

    HomeGroup Listener
    HomeGroup Provider

Using 64Bit, this got rid of them in Windows explorer also.

Shawn, where have you hidden your tutorial? I can't find it I get this mystery reappearing desktop Homegroup icon from time to time. Sometimes it disappears of its own accord and other times it does not.

I appeared to have fixed it anyway by first leaving the Homegroup and secondly stopping then disabling the 2 Homegroup services.

    Hello Peter,

This was for the navigation pane instead, but for the desktop, the tutorial below should work if you don't want to disable the services.
