I tried this method and after 2 reboots, homegroup is back on my desktop.... wtf M$? let me get rid of it please
If you are not part of a homegroup, then you could disable the two services below. That should get rid of it for good.
Services - Start, Stop, and Disable in Windows 8
Hope this helps,
Would this change affect the network at all - not using homegroup, just the usual network connections.
No. Disabling only those two services would only affect homegroup and not any other part of the network.
You're most welcome.
I find that despite Brink's solution the icon periodically (& very mysteriously) reappears for a few minutes then disappears of its own accord. Totally weird. I wonder if it's reacting with my McAfee Beta software which does have a network component?
By the way CalBear posted about it here too: Remove the Homegroup Icon
still poping up randomly!!! lol. I am using a Netgear WNDA3100v2 wireless adapter and am starting to think that drivers are part of the problem... very annoying adapter to deal with even without this issue.
windows 8 detects the adapter and connects to my network when it boots up and then 5 seconds later i think the NETGEAR smartwizard drivers load up and then it disconnects from the network and then reconnects using smartwizard. i can't figure out how to get the adapter to function without the drivers installed though.
