Broken logon and lock screen in Windows 8.1 Update 1

Hello Friends,

Similar issue was solved in this topic: http://www.eightforums.com/customization/33591-problem-changing-windows-8-1-lock-screen-image.html but it was only "similar". Let me descrive:

I made a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro x64 (system was not preinstalled on my Dell Vostro). I set bitlocker, biometrics (fingerprint logon), I choosed LOCK SCREEN and everything worked fine. Until Windows 8.1 Update 1 was installed from Windows Update.

After this update, my lock screen is black. It seems not to be corrupted, because I have all 4 icons (at left-bottom there are two icons - WiFi and something, at right bottom there are two icons - keyboard language and power). Nothing more except an arrow in a circle in the left side of the place where normally there should be an user name and password field.

If I swipe finger on fingerprint reader, I'm logged into desktop without any issues. Everything works normally, except that I cannot change Logon Screen and Lock Screen.

If I go to personalize, I can pick up any image and it is being show in my personalization preview, but even after restart the logon and lock screens are black, like this image is not applied to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData (but I temporary replaced ownership and checked - new Lockscreen_B and _C and _D are created with the correct image when I change image to a different one). I rolled back ownership to SYSTEM.

I googled out everything I could: SFC /SCANNOW, Dism with three different parameters, I made some adjustments in registry (rolled back after they did not work). I even reinstalled graphic drivers, but no change. All updates installed. Everything works correctly except logon and lock screen. They were working fine before big Update 1.

Any ideas how to deal with it? Even 3rd party software to customize logon screen and lock screen changes nothing. Of course all changes I tried to make as an admin (from cmd), normally my account is the only one account on this PC (with admin rights), it is a non-domain account, it's a Live account (logged by the @outlook.com email).

There are bitlocker and fingerprint reader apps running, but even if I uninstall them there is no change. Should I uninstall Update 1?

Kind regards,
Zbigniew

I made a test and I uninstall this big Update 1 (KB2919355) and logon screen and lock screen works fine, I can change it and it is shown correctly.

I will try to install this update again and I will give a feedback, maybe it will help someone else to fix similar issue.

Bad news - after update 1 is installed, this issue backs.

Please remove this topic, I opened a thread in Updates section as Update 1 is a reason.

I have the same problem on my laptop.

After the Update 1 my Lock Screen is completely blue and it's not showing the image anymore, I can see the icons but not the pic.

In addition to that, when I choose to reboot the laptop I can only see the loading circle and not the phrase "rebooting".

Exactly the same issue as mine. Rebooting text is missing, only circle is shown.

Check Windows Update.

I just installed 2 new important updates & they fixed my issues with my Lock screen pictures & Start screen pictures & made some old programs start working again. :)

One of the new updates is KB2933809.

The other--- KB2957390.

Check Windows Update.
One of the new updates is KB2933809.
The other--- KB2957390.
Checked, no updates to install except Bing Bar (disabled).
KB2933809 is already installed.
KB2957390 is not shown on the installed update list and it is not shown in Windows Update when I search for updates. I downloaded standalone KB installation with this number, but it says it's not applicable for my system (Win 8.1 Pro x64).

I've reported this issue to MS, but to standard help address. I think they will not help unless I pay them around $80 USD for reply.

I hope they will be spammed with this issue and they will release a fix for it soon :)

I would not pay them anything.
