Solved Wierd problem with "PC Settings" Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Yesterday I created two local users with admin rights, I changed their account pictures and changed the background color.
Everything worked fine.
Today when the other user should log in, she wasn't happy with her account picture. So I showed her how to change it. However, when she pressed her username and clicking on change account picture (this should open PC SETTINGS) nothing happend.
I logged in with my user, and noticed that I could not either press that button, but it worked perfectly yesterday.

I tried to walk around this issue by going to control panel and press user accounts. But from there nothing happends when you press "create a new user" for example. In short words: anything that should open the PC SETTINGS-program fails, and absolutely nothing happends.

Any clue why this is happening?

Thank you in advance.

Since noone answered I fixed this problem myself! This is what happends:

If you mark Remove Start menu shortcuts in CCLeaner (which i ran last night and had forghot) it deletes three crucial files in the start menu system that completely disables PC Settings... The file that gave me the error was the first of these.
They all reside in:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs (assuming you have Win8 on C:). The filenames are:
PC Settings.lnk Remote Desktop Connection.lnk and Store.lnk
So, these looks like normal shortcuts, I don't know. Anyway, when I restored them (I have two computers running Windows 8 Consumer Preview) everything worked fine.

I am having the same problem. It was affecting most of the Apps in the Metro screen or whatever, but I was able to reinstall most of them using the Store. However, now the only one that I can not open is "PC Settings". It opens up the screen with the gear icon, then just crashes back to the Metro screen.

I never ran CCleaner or anything. I went to the path you described above and see the files you are talking about, however whenever I click on the PC Settings.lnk, it doesn't do anything.

I have searched this issue and all I have really found is to change my screen resolution, make sure that my adapter driver is installed, and change the UAC settings. I have tried all of this and nothing seems to work.

Any other suggestions? I noticed that the PC Settings.lnk is just a shortcut. Anybody know the path that the actual file is in? All I see is %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH% and that just takes me to my User folder.

Hi Bigthagen87! The this is, that my problem was that NOTHING at all happend when I clicked things that were going to the pc settings shortcut. (I did'nt know it was missing before I checked with my other computer). Your error is different, since you actually have the shortcut in the right place. The real path to pc settings is here: C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel\Systemsettings.exe. Note! Even with a working PC Settings, nothing will happend if you just double-click this file, it is designed to work just with the help from that shortcut that you have. However, one important question is: Have your pc settings ever worked, or did it crashed from the start? If it worked from the beginning, have you installed any driver or program lately that may be connected to this error? Systemsettings.exe should be 974 608 bytes, and the details say: File Version: 6.2.8250.0.

Hello VR, thanks for the reply.

No, my PC Settings has never worked that I know of. As I mentioned, most of the Apps in the Metro UI encountered this same error until I reinstalled them from the Store. Of course, I can't uninstall and reinstall the PC Settings option.

I tried to create a shortcut to the PC Settings path that you referred to up above and then paste it in the other folder and rename it to PC Settings, but that did not work either. I checked the details and it has the same size and version that you described above.

I also started another post with all this information. Since this one had "Solved" at the beginning, I figured it might not get checked as opposed to starting a new post.

Hope someone can help you! :) A long shot, but If you have a SSD-drive or a harddrive connected to a controller instead of a "normal" sata port, check to find the latest driver for that controller. Sometimes Intels Chipset Software Installation utility, Intel RST or (Special controller vendor driver) do tricks. But as I said, really a longshot :S

I went ahead and just reinstalled.

Before I did, I created a Local Account and noticed that it worked just fine. I am guessing that since I upgraded from the Developers Preview that something might have gotten messed up in the installation that prevented the apps from working. No big deal.

OK, you made an upgrade! i did a clean install, that's also a difference! :) Nice to hear that you got it working. Strange that the new local account worked.

Sevnalive, do you have my problem or Bightagen87's problem? If you have exactly my problem, this will work.

Download the missing shortcuts here:
Desktop.zip
I have packed them in a zipfile named desktop.zip.
Extract them to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Good luck!

Hey, I found out how to easily fix this:

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html

1. Go to Desktop--> C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe. Open Command Prompt.Important: You must run Command Prompt as an administrator in Windows 7 and Windows Vista to use System File Checker.
2. Once Command Prompt is open, type the following command and then press Enter : sfc /scannow
Note: There's a space between sfc and /scannow.
3.System File Checker will now verify the integrity of every protected operating system file on your computer. Wait 15-20 minutes until it's all done.
4. Restart your computer if sfc /scannow did actually repair any files.
Note: System File Checker may or may not prompt you to restart but even if it doesn't, you should restart anyway
5. Repeat whatever process caused your original problem to see if sfc /scannow corrected the issue.
6. I figured out this last night, by myself, and worked like a charm. Now i can use PC Setting Metro Style.
7. Njoy! Share is love!

It Was CCleaner, it has a feature to clean missing shortcuts in the start menu.
Well that's strange because I don't have any registry cleaning programs installed and I've had this problem since the get go!

Ran system file check with command sfc /scannow and it made no difference.

Anyone got any other ideas?

I wouldn't advise using CCleaner on a beta operating system. It's asking for trouble, sometimes even on an established operating system.
