Custom Icons Not Showing

I'm having problems changing the Metro tile icons for the "old school" apps.

When I change the icon, it is blank... showing only the default white square icon. Do the icons for Win 8 have to be in a certain format? If so, can anyone give me the specifics?

Thanks!

*edit* It would be great if they let you use .png's... but no such luck.

I have the same problem I've tried different sizes, with or without transparency with no luck. Strangely the icons that I have made previously in window 7 work when applied to a shortcut in windows 8 very strange.

even when you use pngs with transparency (via vs2012 beta tile maker) you get a colored or white background for transparency. also noticed you cant have alpha for desktop images.

Old thread but... has anyone figured this out? I cannot apply my icons to apps and shortcuts... And the ones I created in Windows 7 don't show either. Not a HUGE deal, but I am visual... I like to stick my build and server run icons in my start bar for quick access...
