Hello hurricae,

I'm not sure if you mean from the Start screen or taskbar with the way you explained it. Please clarify if the below doesn't help.

You usually can open another window from the taskbar if you press and hold the Shift key, click on the icon, and release Shift.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Ah cheers that actually solves the problem, but i was talking about the task bar and wanted to know that if i clicked the icon the icon would stay there ready to be clicked again if needed and the window still opened so that all my pins would be there at all times.

If you pinned the program to the taskbar, then it's icon will remain on the taskbar after closing the windows.

If you like, you could also pin items in the Jump List of the pinned program to help make open them easier again.

Yeah, I don't like the way programs pinned to the Taskbar work either. What you can do is put a Quick Launch toolbar on the Taskbar, drag it to the left of the taskbar and then put shortcuts to the programs you want to launch in there. That way the icons will stay there all the time and allow you to click them to launch multiple instances without needing to use the shift key.

A tutorial on using the Quick Launch toolbar can be found at the below link. If you un-tick the 'Show Text' and 'Show Title' and use large icons (all of which is shown in the below tutorial), you'll be left with just the icons you can click on:
