I tried the tutorial for W7 but did not work: The permission changes on ShellFolder could not be done.
I also want to get rid of the Homegroup icon.
Has anyone come up ways to do these?

I meant that I stumbled at the step 4: I got an error message, "Unable to save permission changes on ShellFolder. Access is denied".
I did not see this message when doing the same on W7. Any suggestion is appreciated. (I have not yet tried the tutorial for removing Homegrope on W8)

Yep, in Windows 8 you must take ownership (click on this link for how in Windows 8) of the ShellFolder key at step 4 and 9 first to not get that "...Access is denied." message. In Windows 7, you didn't have to, but you do with Windows 8. Afterwards, you should be able to change the permissions, and do the rest of the steps in the tutorial. That's all. :)

I merged the reg to add "Take Ownership" in the context menu. Then, I tried right-click on a folder in the Windows Explorer and confirmed that the "Take Ownershit" was added in the context menu. My present problem is that the "Take ownership" is not in the context menu when I attempt to take ownership of the ShellFolder. What could be wrong?

Churin,

For a registry key, you will have to use step 3 in OPTION THREE of the take ownership tutorial above to manually take ownership of it instead. :(

Now I got it about "take ownership".

I could remove the Libraries, but am still having difficulty removing the Homegroup. After rebooting W8 the Homegroup is gone from the Windows Explorer. BUT if I turn on "Show all folders", the Homegroup comes right back on, and stays even after truning off "Show all folders"..

I could remove the Homegroup from W7x64. So I double checked the registry settings at the two locations but could not find anything wrong.
I am wondering what I did wrong?

After searching the registy for all entries for the Homegroup GUID key number, it appears that there was a slight change made with the Homegroup one in Windows 8 that needs to also be done in addition to the Windows 7 tutorial. Since you already did the tutorial, you would only need to do what's below for the change.

If you go to the registry location below, they added a BlockNewFile string value in the right pane of the ShellFolder key there. If you right click on the BlockNewFile string value, click on Delete and Yes to approve, and restart the computer, then Homegroup should be gone afterwards.

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}\ShellFolder

That was a fun to figure out. Hope it works for you as well. :)

Churin,

Perhaps you may have more than one BlockNewFile string value entry.

Use the Find and Find Next option in regedit to search for all {B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93} key entries in the left pane of regedit, then see if it's subkey ShellFolder has a BlockNewFile string value in the right pane like in the screenshot above. If it does, then delete the BlockNewFile string value.

I found one more place where the subkey ShellFolder has a BlockNewFile string value, and which I delted. But the Homegroup still showed up. :( I checked the Attritutes data by passing and confirmed they were all modified to b094010c.

If so, then I'm not sure what else it may be yet.

No problem. Hopefully we'll get it worked out after some more testing.

Probably just in time for a beta release with all of this changed again, and we'll have to start over. :p
