SkyDrive for Desktop on Win8 and Win8.1 Preview

  • When I use File Explorer on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Preview I have the navigation pane set to 'show all folders' and 'automatically expand to folder'.
  • On Win8 I use SkyDrive for Desktop, and I place the SkyDrive folder in 'C:\Users\Karl\'; and the SkyDrive folder appears in the File Explorer navigation pane under the Karl Dixon folder.
  • Win 8.1preview has Skype for Desktop integrated into the OS.; and the SkyDrive folder appears at the top of the File Explorer navigation pane.
As I am currently back using Win8 due to an unrelated issue, I would like to know how to have Win8 show the SkyDrive folder at the top of the navigation pane whilst still using 'show all folders' and 'automatically expand to folder' settings.

I'm currently hoping that if I uninstall SkyDrive desktop on Windows 8 before I upgrade to the final release version of Windows 8.1, where SkyDrive will be baked-into Win8.1, that will fix it. I am only trying to replicate the behaviour of Win8.1 Preview, which I installed on both my Win8Pro and Win8EnterpriseN machines previously, and both had the built-in SkyDrive folder located at the top of the navigation pane in File Explorer.

Yes to both questions. I am really hoping that when I upgrade to the final version of 8.1 that SkyDrive is still located at the top of the navigation pane - whilst using 'show all folders' and 'automatically expand to folder' - or if not that there is an option to place it there.

Does anyone know how it is set-up in the latest 8.1 leaks?

That sounds good then. I don't use the Favorites/Links navigation pane setting as I prefer the show all folders/auto expand to current folder setting. if the baked-in skydrive in windows 8.1 does indeed stay at the top of the navigation pane in the final release of win8.1 I will be very happy.

I usually clear-out my navigation panel except for User Folder, Computer and Recycle Bin. Although with Win8.1 since certain user folders are included in the This PC/My Computer page (and I understand I can add and subtract different ones), I may also remove User Folder from my navigation menu too.

Just waiting for the final release now, as when I upgraded to the RTM something went wrong with my graphics/game streaming abilities.

On the final release of 8.1 now. I uninstalled SkyDrive for Desktop on Win8 before upgrading to 8.1

first of all, very glad to see that SkyDrive keeps hold of it's position at the top of the navigation pane (well, underneath Desktop, but so is everything else).

secondly, my user folder seems to still contain a skydrive folder - which is where it used to be when I had SkyDrive for desktop installed on my vanilla Win8; and where it might still be stored despite having it's own navigation pane position - and also a mysterious SkyDrive.old folder.

Should I be worried about either SkyDrive folder inside my user folder? (Local Settings is unrelated, it's f.lux's preferences).

In Windows 8.1, SkyDrive is fully integrated. You do have a "SkyDrive" folder as one of your user folders now by default. It's used to sync between your PC and online SkyDrive. This is the same folder that the one in the navigation pane uses.

The SkyDrive.old folder looks to be a backup created from when you updated from Windows 8.

If you like, you can enable or disable SkyDrive integration in Windows 8.1 at any time.

That's what I figured. So I should be ok to delete the SkyDrive.old folder then :)

If there's nothing in it that you don't want to copy into the other one, then yes it'll be safe to delete it. :)
