Adding Online Banking Icon to taskbar changes to IE Icon

I have created a shortcut icon which takes me directly to my Online Banking Login page.
I would like to place this icon (an image of a padlock taken from windows icon cache) on the taskbar.
My problem is, when I drag the icon to the taskbar a popup asks me if I want to 'Pin to Internet Explorer'...this is the only option given.
If I drop the icon onto the taskbar it changes my 'Padlock' icon to that of Internet Explorer...Clicking on this IE icon still takes me to my Online Banking Login page but I find it confusing having an IE icon.

Does anyone know how I can have my 'Padlock' icon showing on the taskbar.

Thanks

Jan

Thanks for the link but there is nothing in there that solves my problem...

I have no problem pinning a link icon on the taskbar to my Online Bank.
My problem is that because the link icon...(an image of a 'Padlock') is to a webpage windows 8 changes the icon from a 'Padlock' to a Internet Explorer icon. I find this confusing as when I click on the IE icon it takes me to my Bank but when I close the Bank webpage the next time I click on the icon it opens IE.

I appreciate you taking the time to try and help me out...

Jan

Hi Dude...Thanks for the tip, which I must have missed before. This does work but unfortunately my bank does not have it's own icon...it uses the IE icon...so I am back where I started...:(

See this picture :

It seems odd the icon changes on the taskbar.

Screenshots of before it changes & after it changes would help.

First image shows my Padlock icon as it appears on the Desktop and the only option I am given when it is dragged to the Taskbar.
Second image shows the Padlock icon changed into a Internet Explorer icon once it is placed on the Taskbar.
When I first click on the IE icon it opens my Online Bank Login page but when I close the Login page and the next time I click on the IE icon it takes to my default IE Home page.

what you are doing is adding a site to a jump list. You can edit the "Icon" to suit your needs but it will change all the generic icons involved, so its pointless.

Try this > WinAero: Downloads / Software / Pin to 8 This will allow you to add a custom link to the taskbar and edit it.

Send a weblink /bookmark to the desktop and then move it somewhere safe , like your documents folder or wherever.. Open up the "Pin to 8" folder and select the correct version . X64 if you use an x64 version of windows. :geek:

Run the .exe and select to pin a file. Locate your bookmark.

Pin it to the task bar.

Right click on the Icon and then right click on the .url and select properties.

Change the Icon to what you want and apply.

Log off and back on and it should change.

I just tried it and works for me. Hope that helps ? Any problems post back and I will do my best to help out.

EDIT : I read the post wrong SORRY. I misunderstood what you wanted .......I think ?

You can pretty much pin anything to the start screen or the taskbar with it. Nifty lil .exe IMO. The only thing is don't delete the original shortcut or you will lose the function of it on the taskbar (With bookmarks).

Thanks for the rep Medab1 , I don't deserve it really as all I did was supply a link and type a few lines on how to use it. Its the first I have recieved lol. woohoo !

Hi Sean, I have followed your instructions several times but I still can't get the icon to change even though it allows me to change the icon it does not change...As you and Medap1 have managed to do this OK I must be doing something wrong.
When I pin the icon to the taskbar and right click it say's 'Online banking'...not the URL. If left click on the icon to open it I am asked what programme I want to open it with...If I select IE it opens a page of text relating to my Bank but does not show the login page...see pics.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong.

Hi Jan,

Im sure we can sort this out. So first things first. Open up your browser .Then create a new book mark for your banks log in page.

bank log in.PNG

Now open up your bookmarks and on the new bookmark, Right click on it and select copy.

Now go to the desktop and right click on an empty space and select "paste shortcut". I did this in IE10. My shortcut icon shows as a google chrome shortcut as that is my default browser. It wont matter at all , its just I'm to lazy to change it to IE for you ;).

Open up the "Pin to Start" folder you have downloaded from the link I supplied and open up the correct version. If its X64 use that one.( Do you know what version you are on ? If you don't open up the control panel /system and it will be shown half way down the screen.)

bank sc.PNG

Now you will need to select to "Pin a File" , then locate your bookmark/ shortcut on the desktop.

select file.PNG

Then select to "pin to Task bar "

select file and pin.PNG

It should now be pinned and it will have that ugly IE10 thing......Meh !

So right click on it and then right click on the TOP link ( thats a link to the .url , the website) and choose properties.

Screenshot (30).png

Now choose the Icon of your dreams and select OK , then "Apply " and then "OK" and the small properties window should close.

icon change.PNG

I still have that crappy icon showing, so what I did was log off and then back on again. This will clear the cache and refresh your icons. If that wont work , just reboot your system and you will be fine and dandy :D As you can see I have changed the default icon to a green and blue globe type thingy......You can use any Icon you wish from the web , just make sure it is in the .ico format.

Does that work for you ? If it works (fingers crossed ) you will need to move the bookmark shortcut on the desktop somewhere nice and safe .Anywhere you want , just so long as it wont get deleted. If you delete it the taskbar icon wont work anymore as it will not be linked to the shortcut , if that makes sense ?

Sean.

EDIT : out of curiosity what are you using to take your pics ? they are really blurry and can't really see the last one Jan. Let me know and I will explain/show you how to take some nice ones.

Hi Sean and Medab1, Thank you for taking all this time and effort to help me...it is really brilliant...

I have followed your steps exactly many times but I still can't get it work...I have managed to get the Padlock icon onto the taskbar...No idea how...it just appeared. Unfortunately if click on it all I get is a popup asking how I want to open the file...if I choose IE it only shows me the page full of text, not the Login page.

I looked at the icon properties to see if there was anything to give clue what was wrong. I was surprised to see the Target location as 'YN0RDSTM'...never heard of it. Also the in the Target box it shows...

"C:\Users\jan18\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YN0RDSTM\Online Banking"

and in the 'Start in' box it shows...

"C:\Users\jan18\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\YN0RDSTM"

This does not look right to me...

I have cleared everything on my PC and rebooted but nothing seems to change.

The address in your picture is wrong.
It should be like in my picture.
Notice the difference between mine & yours.

When you make the shortcut you need to use the bank's address, not some file on the computer.

If follow the instructions exactly,it'll work.
