This might be ongoing... but there are several things I find if I can customize will work better for my experience.

Lets start with the "search" is there anyway this can be added to the start menu? Along with shutdown being added to the start menu?

When I go into the actual search it does not find folders even if I use the keyword folder, can I add a folder tab to the top by documents pictures music other? Is there a way to move the order of "apps" "settings" "files" under the search? The subcategories so that say default it searches files instead of apps?

Thanks!

Hello PinkFloydEffect. Welcome to the EightForums.

Where to begin ...

> When you are looking at the start screen, type a letter or so and see how search is automatic <

When you say start menu, are you referring to the start screen?
I would suggest downloading oblytile (free) which has many customization options including a shut down tile.

If you wish to use the edge UI search (charms) for files, you will have to add index locations to the default.
http://www.eightforums.com/performa...s-everyone-know-about-indexing.html?highlight
Otherwise, file searches are best done using the file explorer search feature.

Also, I suggest this post for a few tweaks about the start screen search.

I have got it setup mostly how I want it now, I will have to look further into changing the default search category looks like it could be quite the process.

I did figure out that Win8 does a hybrid shutdown so I made a FULL shutdown tile on the start menu. However I am having real trouble creating a SLEEP tile even though there are numerous sites that give the shortcut code for creating a sleep tile because the code they all give makes it hibernate NOT sleep :( any idea how to make a true-sleep tile please??

Oblytile (version 0.9) is an interesting free program for download.
Easily creates custom tiles.

If you wish to sleep your system, another way is to set your power button to sleep the computer from power options.

The command for "Sleep" is:
C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0
so just create a short on the desktop or in any folder then pin it to the start menu.

Hope this helps

I would rather do things manually; creating tiles.

I do not want to bend down under my desk to access the power button, I have a case with a face that needs to swing out to access the button too.

topgundcp- I swear to god that code line hibernates my computer already tried it twice!!

Oh. Sorry about that. My power button is right next to the mouse and keyboard.
Well, doing things manually is fine but OblyTile has some nice features.
It creates the code line shortcuts you want. And there are all kinds of manually customizable settings.
I don't know if you ever used it, but there is no installer. It just executes from a folder.

No installer you say? I might give it a shot then, wish I knew why it will not sleep :sarc: if I use the menu on the right side of the screen and go to settings, sleep works under the on-screen power button.

Also, not sure if OblyTile will do this or not but I need help creating an EMPTY recycle bin tile not an open tile.

Empty Recycle Bin Tile

Also, not sure if OblyTile will do this or not but I need help creating an EMPTY recycle bin tile not an open tile.

I just tested this link's method.

Empty recycle bin by simply clicking a desktop shortcut or through command prompt

It works.
Remember to copy it to system 32 as directed in the link !

You don't really need a 'search' shortcut: just begin to type when you're on the start screen and it will automatically search.

The sleep command as a shortcut is different from what the OS-original one does but it works well, not sure how you tell that's hibernate (It seems I need to press only the power button to wake the pc again, but for the OS sleep pressing any key or moving mouse wakes the pc).

    That's basically it.
I downloaded the recycle bin app but it asks me if I am sure I want to delete the items, is there a way I can bypass/remove the prompt??

Yes I have realized you can type right from the start menu it was cleared up in this thread already.

How can I tell? Maybe because it says "resuming from hibernation" but the sleep function wakes from mouse movement. I'm 100% sure the tile using the sleep code hibernates my computer...

recycle batch file

I downloaded the recycle bin app but it asks me if I am sure I want to delete the items, is there a way I can bypass/remove the prompt??

Yes.

Make a batch file with this text:

EmptyRecycleBin.exe /Q
pause

The prompt will disappear.
I just tested it & it works.

Put the batch file somewhere like My Documents & create a shortcut & in its Properties check the Run as administrator box & ok & apply & ok.

Pin it to Start.
A picture:

Untitled.png

I pinned the shortcut because it is set to be run as administrator.

Thanks! More problems though haha I renamed that application "Empty Trash" so it fits and looks better in the start menu and now that batch will not work but the application still works renamed. I tried renaming the line in the code after what i named the application but it still does not work.

Just for future purposes I'm pretty sure Windows creates a copy of the shortcut for the start menu before you move it. Example: I created the full shutdown shortcut on my desktop, pinned to start menu and deleted from desktop and it still works several restarts later and it's not in the recycle bin either.

You cannot rename the EXE file unless you rename it in System32 first.

It needs to be:

EmptyRecycleBin.exe /Q
pause

to point to the System32 file as is.
Use the same name or it won't work.

Did you not see the photo I did rename it in System32 first man, if I have to revert the name I will but if I can get it to work under my name...all the better.

Thanks for the link.

----------------------------------------------------

I started looking back into getting the search setup the way I wanted it, I like how you can use the Windows key + F and it will automatically search files first (my music) however nothing automatically shows up it just pitches keywords to click on. Ultimately this is how I would like the search setup:

Start Screen > (type something) Search > 1st-Files/2nd-Settings/3rd-Apps (it is reversed by default Apps-Settings-Files)

If I can get Files to be the default search category instead of Apps then I have further requests, currently by default the Files categories lists as follows:

All - Documents - Pictures - Music - Video - Other (All is 1st by default) I would like music to be default as for that is what I search for the most...why search for Apps when you have the start screen setup the way you want ya know?

Basically in a nut shell when I type at the start screen I want music to instantly show up, if I want to find other files, settings or apps I will click into the categories.

----------------------------------------------------

I'm going to look into the sleep problem on another site as for it might be hardware related but "sleep" is the only thing I need to use the menu on the right side of the screen for, everything in the right hand menu is accessible through the start screen or search so I find it useless.

I thought it already has .exe hidden after whatever you name it since known extension types are hidden?

I can not have a space in the file name if used with a batch file?

I removed the space and it works, BUT, what's the point this does not remove the prompt it just switches the additional action from a click verification to a key. I wish for it to empty in a single click just like things are deleted with a single press of the delete button; no confirmation (if you have it disabled). If there is a way to remove the "press any key to continue" that is what I am after as long as I don't have to close out the command prompt after.
