Happy New Year everyone!!

I'm wondering, has anyone found or created a metro themed icon replacement set over the Aero iconography?

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean Metro icon sets such as these?

No.
Well you can use those but... not for the start screen this time.
He means the icons in Explorer ribbon and in Desktop interface. All the Aero icons that came from Vista and 7 and up to now. They are in imageres.dll and in shell32.dll and others.

In other words, this icons:
vista256_s.jpg
have to be converted/replaced to Metro Look: no gradients single-colored, simplified.

I'm not even gonna think about all the work you need to achieve this!
I like the current Aero icons and you can wait a long time (after Win8 for sure) until those get replaced.
We use them since 2006 think about that.

Here is something about Aero and the icon set behind it.
Windows Vista: fitted and nearly-finished – istartedsomething

It seems there was a lot of work involved there.

Coke:
Doing the replacement work on your own will take a lot of time and we'll be probably running Win10 by then.
The first issue is finding the icons...

Good luck with this one!

The only hope that will probably save the day is a icon pack like those we saw before.
Example:
Vista transformation for XP, Ubuntu look (or whatever) for 7....

...in that genre.

Oh crap, yeah, THOSE icons!

Like you said, those have been around for now almost a good solid six years. The UI of Windows has shifted real dramatically away from that. I had my hopes up around the Consumer Preview as there were a few screenshots, one of which was the Desktop and it had three icons I remember, Computer, Recycle Bing, and I think something else but I don't remember what. The Computer icon was the same icon as to when you go search for apps, that little metro-y monitor with the tiles on it, WOW! Looked REAL clean and crisp on a Desktop background! I just don't understand, it took a good while for the Aero icons to be designed, Microsoft did that. Office 2013 has a hybrid metro/Aero design to the ENTIRE iconography set, they did that in time. Windows Phone 7 has hundreds and hundreds of pure metro iconography, that was done. But Windows 8, three years of development, iconography was obviously not real high on the list of "reimagining" it seems.

I'm fine with the Aero icons, for now. Preferably, I would like to see some nicely designed, metro icons for the Desktop. I shall wait for the transformation sets, now THOSE are done in a decent time frame!

I'm fine with the icons,
